Yesterday we saw the second Captain Marvel film being released this year.
Here is my spoiler free review.
I think DC is starting to ‘get’ it. They have gone from very dark films both in lighting and tone to fun colorful romps like Aquaman and now Shazam!
The phrase “he was born to play this role” is an often used one however Zachary Levi was born to play this role of a 14 year old boy in a man’s body. There was no point that I didn’t believe it and that’s thanks to the scriptwriters and the fine acting by Mr. Levi whose delivery was spot on.
Kudos also to Jack Dylan Grazer who had some heavy lifting of being the info dump at time as Freddy Freeman but made it sound like a fan who is more than happy to tell you all about his favorite characters.
Asher Angel did well as Billy Batson and there was a scene towards the end of the film that he didn’t say anything as another character was talking to him but his face spoke volumes. I expect to see more from that young actor.
Mark Strong was the villain of the piece playing Dr. Thaddeus Sivana with an American accent that was passable although a bit silted. Here the filmmakers went with the look of the villain from the comic book but created a back-story out of whole cloth along with a few other things. He is a good villain but we knew that from his previous outings as Lord Blackwood among others.
The script was serviceable and pretty much a by the numbers Superhero origin story for Captain Marvel (DC).
There were nice nods and a couple of Easter eggs for the true fan but you didn’t have to know the entire history of the character to follow what was going on.
It is a fun film with a lot of action that you can clearly see. The humor doesn’t feel forced. It has its serious moments and its silly moments paced out nicely.
Worth seeing in a theater because there are some scenes that will lose a lot on the smaller screen including some of the fights.
I will warn for a violent car crash that I swear I felt the impact as it was happening on screen and some jump scares through out. Might be a little intense for younger viewers.
