Where Awesome Con still lives up to its name.
Yesterday Caroline and I went to the National Zoo. I didn’t know that there was no charge to go to the Zoo here. I was pleasantly surprised.
Apparently we lucked out that the baby panda wanted to come out and play.
We saw a number of animals that Caroline has read about and not seen including the sand cat, the fish cat, and the fennec fox.
The zoo is well organized and the volunteers are knowledgeable. I learned things about various animals I didn’t know.
At one point we came across a zookeeper with a tiny armadillo who was running around. She talked about the animal and their habits while we could watch the animal act and react to the environment around her. The critter was 16 years old and had been doing this demo for over 10 years so she was really use to people.
The convention was at that high Saturday buzz that conventions get. It was hard to hear people talk so we ended up shouting to be heard. Peter had his Q & A and that went well. He got some good questions from the audience and they were diverse questions as well spanning most of his writing career.

(for the VI: This is Peter on the left and his moderator on the right. The sign language interpreter is in front of the table. Behind them is a banner that says Awesome Com)
Today is going to be a mad house because Capaldi and Coleman are joining the fray. The Doctor Who fans are vibrating at the thought of meeting the current Doctor.
Today also we are going to go hear Bill Nye talk which I am very much looking forward to.
So busy today. More on it, I hope, tomorrow.
Some Zoo photos behind the cut because Zoos are Awesome.
I am grateful for the experiences we have had in Washington DC so far.
The youngest panda was rolling around outside and got stuck in this tree for a moment before figuring out that they could free themselves if they went backwards.

(For the VI: This is the panda exhibit at the National Zoo. There are two trees that have grown right next to each other making a V shape. The panda’s head and arm are on one side of the tree with the rest of the panda on the other side of the tree. Mama Panda’s rump can be seen in the top of the photo)
We aw a blue piranha that we dubbed the disco ball piranha. The photo does not do the scales justice. It was fabulous.

(for the VI: This is a fish tank that is bathed in purple/blue light. In the middle is the blue piranha with incandescent scales. The head is to the left and the tail to the right)
The sand cat doing what most cats do around 11 AM.

(For the VI: This is a picture of a sand cat who is the color of sand with slightly darker stripes across its back. It is curled up in a ball between a rock and a tree stump.)
This is a fish cat that likes the water a lot and catches fish to eat. I love the tuffs in the ears.

(for the VI: This is a photo of a fish cat. The cat is brown and had black and white tuffs coming out of its ears. It looks a little like a pointed eared mountain lion)
Caroline who has seen zoos all over the world gives the National Zoo two thumbs up.

(for the VI: This is Caroline. She is wearing a black hat with a red brim and the Spider-man 2099 logo on the hat. She has a purple t-shirt with Toothless and Stitch on it wearing costume of each other. She is wearing a small watch around her neck. Her pants have a purple, blue, and white pattern)
