Caroline decided that for her 13th birthday, she wanted a Harry Potter party.

Simple and complicated at the same time. There are a lot of ideas and how to’s for Harry Potter parties out there on the Internet. However Harry Potter items are no longer available for sale in party stores so we had to make our own along with figuring out what was going to happen during the party itself.

So behind the cut is a rather photo heavy of the crafty things we got up to for the party.

The invitation for the party was a Howler. We took red paper and folded it into the body of the howler then put the invite into the mouth. We took white cardstock and made the teeth so they could fold up into the mouth. Then added a length of ribbon that would wrap around the howler and made it the tongue.

(For the VI: This is the invite. It is red with white teeth and a red ribbon for the tongue. In the back of the “throat” is the invite)

(For the VI: These are the howler invites all closed up with the ribbon I used for the tongue wrapped around holding the invite closed.)

So we had the invites but now we had to figure out the party.

(For the VI: This is our front door covered in craft paper with a sign that says Platform 9 3/8. There is a brick pattern created to make an arch.)

The party goers met Caroline on the front porch were she gave them a sock and a ticket. They then entered the room where they met Dobby who asked to trade the sock for a prize. They would give Dobby the sock and get their dorm room key for Hogwarts. They matched up their keys to see who their dorm roommates were.

I had built Dobby a number of years ago for a Harry Potter Roast and he has come in very useful since.

We set up the Owl Post for the party guests to write, if they wanted, a letter for Caroline. I suggested some memory they had of her or what ever came to mind. They were very creative in their missives. Caroline had great fun reading the letters that evening.

I got the owl post sign from the Jonesing2create website along with a number of other good ideas for the party.

In the upper right is a sign that says “Owl Post Create your own piece of owl post “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from swift completion of their appointed rounds” There are paper, envelopes and pens for writing the letters)

To create the atmosphere in the room, we made “floating” candles using a paper tube, a LED candle, and white paper. I used clear tape to get them to attach to the beam. The effect worked well.

(for the VI: This is a picture of a beam in our house with the LED candles taped so it looks like the candles aren’t attached)

We took random things that we had and put together a display of things you might find in Hogwarts including a sword, a diadem, a cat skeleton, some bottles, a puppet mouse, candles and some books.

One of the funnier things we did was take a picture of Moaning Myrtle and put it just so when someone opened the toilet lid she was there looking at them.

(For VI: This is a picture of Moaning Myrtle on the inside of the toilet lid.)

We also had a Qudditch practice where one kid had the Nimbus broom and the Quaffle and had to run a gauntlet of the other party guests tossing tennis balls at them to get to a point where they would try to get the ball through a ring.

We used a laser pointer to figure out what house everyone was in. I had the shields of the house on a wall and the person would be blindfolded and had to point the laser pointer at the wall. Whatever house they hit was theirs.

We played some Harry Potter trivia and put on the extended edition of the first film, which is almost three hours long. It played in the background giving us the music for the party.

They also played a very loud game of Apples to Apples which has become a staple at Caroline’s birthday parties.

Overall I think everyone had a good time. Caroline was most happy with her party declaring it best party ever and in the end that is all that really matters.

She has already declared she wants a Doctor Who themed party next year.

I am grateful that the party went over as well as it did and the kids really got into it.
