This episode is why I watch Doctor Who. The speech that the Doctor gives on War and its consequences both big and small was brilliantly written by Peter Harness and Steven Moffat and acted by Peter Capaldi. It is a thing of beauty.
When I was much younger and people asked why do you like Doctor Who I would point to the episode “Genesis of the Daleks” and the speech the Doctor gives about does he have the right to commit genocide and end the Daleks before they even start. It was an awesome speech written by Terry Nation and performed by Tom Baker.
That speech and this speech are some of my favorite Doctor Who moments of all time. And they are of a piece since each reflects on things that the Doctor has done and might do. It expands the character so much.
Overall I enjoyed this a lot. I was sort of iffy after the last episode but this one had all the answers to any problems I had to the first part so as a whole, it worked.
So bravo to all involved in the making of that episode. It is one that will live in Who fans hearts for a long time.
Spoilers behind the cut and in the comments of course.
I really like the conundrum of the Osgoods. Are they both Zygons? Human and Zygon? And her answer is I am Osgood with the attitude that is all you need to know.
I think 15 times is a little much. I was trying to figure out if he had wiped Kate’s mind 15 times or dealt with the Zygon/Human problem 15 times. Of course the Doctor lies and tends to exaggerate a bit so there is that.
That Clara was the one who kept Bonnie from being able to get rid of the Doctor worked for me. The imprint can influence the Zygon is not a bad idea but now needs to be forgotten.
And how good was Capaldi? I find it sad that he won’t win an Emmy for that speech since he so richly deserves it. He moved up my Doctor Who ladder of favorites. Still has two in front of him but he might go up another rung if he can pull another one of those speeches.
I like these two episodes as a piece.
And I am glad that we left the door open for more Osgood. She is becoming the Brigadier of this era and I am fine with that.
