When I heard that Maisie Williams had been cast in Doctor Who, I was intrigued. I had enjoyed her on Game of Thrones and thought she had grown a lot as an actress as the seasons went on. I was not disappointed.
This was one that you could drop almost any Doctor into except for one detail that I will discuss in the spoiler section behind the cut.
I think we are getting a little more fleshed out on what the arc this season. I have a theory, which I will propose later.
Good story over all. Solid Doctor Who which seems to be the norm these days.
OK use of puppets made me smile a lot. But that’s because…well…puppets.
The idea of broadcasting the Mire’s shame to the galactic equivalent of the Internet was fun. I think the adding of the Benny Hill theme was inspired but we had to explain to Caroline why we were laughing so hard. That was a non-violent way to defeat the enemy.
Now we have the reason for that face in particular. I loved seeing the reference back to the Fires of Pompeii and the consequences of those actions and how that informs what he does next.
The line "immortality means watching everyone else die" hit me in the feels. It is an interesting twist on the live forever and the downside to it. The final shot of Ashildr going from happy to sad to angry was brilliant and a credit to the actress.
Also we have another hybrid running around for the prophecy to take into account.
So good solution for the problem at hand and good set up for what comes next.
I am grateful for young actors who prove that they are so much more than just one role.
