Holiday Catalogues

We did go to the comic book store yesterday but avoided the mall. We got our usual comics and went to a restaurant that we both like which was across from a major mall. We arrived right before the lunch crowd did. By the time we left the place was crowded with shoppers and their families.
The catalogues are descending on the household. There has been a marked increase in catalogues in our mailbox. Some of them I enjoy going through. Yesterday we received the Museum Replicas catalogue and the Disney Holiday sale catalogue along with a bunch that went into recycling without looking. The newspapers are stuffed with circulars for just about every store on Long Island. I really enjoy the Museum Replicas catalogue. It is one of those that I want just about everything in the catalogue but know that I would not have enough room for all the weapons and cloths they have for sale.
It was from Museum Replicas that we got Peter’s King Arthur Sword and his helm. I then created a much lighter version of it. I made his tunic for his King Arthur outfit. Next year I want to make him the chain mail out of a great fabric I have. I need to get him a good pair of boots to complete the outfit. Something I want to do before we go to the Ren Faire next year.
The Disney catalogue has its usual jumble of stuff. Current there are three licenses they own that I am interested in which are “A Nightmare before Christmas”, “The Muppets”, and “Winnie the Pooh”. Some of the retro Incredibles stuff is nice too. This is a house of the mouse. Peter and I like a lot of stuff that Disney makes. We also enjoy going as a family to the various theme parks. Yes I know that it is an illusion all the way. I have heard how evil the Mouse is to its employees. I still enjoy my love of all things Disney. When I was a kid I watched the Wonderful World of Disney and enjoyed a lot of the programs there. Peter proposed to me at the Adventurers Club on Pleasure Island. We took the Disney Cruise for our honeymoon.
I also enjoy looking through the Land’s End and LL Bean catalogues. There are so many ways to keep warm and toasty during the cold winter. I don’t think Land’s End went down hill when Sears bought them. They still have great solid children’s clothing. Caroline’s Land’s End clothing has worn very well. There is just a feeling of New England in an LL Bean catalogue. Flannel is the norm in Bean World. I still have a pair of hiking boots I got almost 15 years ago from the LL Bean outlet. They are finally wearing out in the toes. The soles are worn but still in good shape.
We receive a bunch of teen catalogues from various stores that cater to them. Some with practical clothing and some with “no way you are leaving the house looking like a hooker” clothing. A lot of these catalogues are starting to size up for the growing girth of teens. Even stores like Hot Topic have spin offs like Torrid to allow for large sized teens to get the clothing they want.
Because we have the munchkin, we are seeing an increase in toy catalogues and toddler catalogues. I think my favorite to look through of those are the catalogues that have the toys you need imagination to play with rather than electricity. The Lego catalogue is amazing. When we started with Legos, it was cool to have curved pieces. The ultimate was a motor. Now many of the sets look more like straight model building rather than what can you make with 100 Lego pieces.
Then there are the bizarre things catalogues. I put the Archie McPhee catalogue in that category. Recently we received a catalogue titled, ‘Stuff you didn’t even know you wanted”. There were a few cool things in there. Then there was the catalogue of nothing but collectible action figures from various TV series and Movies. I am glad that we do recycle because the flood of paper that is entering this house is amazing.
I am grateful for catalogues
