Caroline received her flu shot with her wellness visit this year. She is not overly fond of needles but she took it to prevent the flu.

Wednesday I was getting ready to make her lunch. Caroline was feeling and sounding very congested. She gave me a hug and I could feel the heat radiating off her skin. I took her temperature and it was 101.2.

So no school and we set her up on the couch for the day.

In the afternoon she spiked 104 and throwing up. At that point we took her to the Doctor.

They did some tests and came back with the verdict, which was that she has the flu. They prescribed Tamuflu to shorten the symptoms and said she could not go back to school until Monday at the earliest.

Caroline was not happy about this at all. She had taken the shot but apparently they missed a strain this year so the flu shot is great except for what she has.

She got home and continued to throwing up for a good part of the evening.

Eventually she fell asleep and was able to get more than 20 minutes at a clip.

Peter stayed up and worked on various projects and I went to sleep. We tag teamed at 7 and he went to sleep while I took care of Caroline.

She spent most of the day resting but by the evening except for the fever, she was pretty much back to normal. Since she had slept most of the day, she had a hard time falling asleep but once she did she was out for the night.

This morning she has the sniffies and a bit of a fever but she is definitely on the mend.

So far, knock on wood, Peter and I are symptom free but there has been a lot of hand washing going on and germ prevention. The cats have been hovering around her and taking turns sleeping with her. I think they have a rotation figured out.

She is concerned about getting behind in her schoolwork but her teachers assured her they would work with her to get her caught up.

So that’s what has been going on around here. Hoping that is it for us the only visit of the flu monster.

I am grateful that Caroline is getting better.

I heard a news story on NPR last week saying that this year's fly shot cocktail is proving to be about about 30% effective. They didn't plan well for 2015.

According to the Health Department here, the flu shot this year was widely off the mark. Almost 100% of the medically confirmed cases of flu in my area were among people that had received the flu shot. Most likely, people who do not get flu shots also do not go to the doctor with "flu-like symptoms" so there are probably just as many people catching it that did not get the shot, but they cannot give any numbers for those people.
