We are coming to the end of another season of Dr. Who. I hadn't realized it had been that long. It seems that we just started this wacky journey with the new Doctor and it is concluding.
Most of this review is going to be behind a cut due to it is very hard to talk about it without spoilers since the whole thing was a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows.
Many many kudos to the actors especially Mr. Capaldi and Ms. Coleman. I thought this was some of the best work Ms. Coleman has done this whole season. The scene with the Doctor and the Volcano was intense. Mr. Anderson was in the difficult position of having to act without much action. Believe me it is harder to do that than pretend you are fighting Daleks.
Michelle Gomez was fun. Nothing felt out of place considering what we had seen of her before. More on her character in the spoiler section.
Nice start to the conclusion. Awaiting what happens next.
The Rani. I really thought that the Master was too obvious so I went with the one evil female time lord who happened to look a bit like Missy and that would be the Rani.
However Mr. Moffat has now official established that Time Lords don't have to stay one gender. Yes it is not a female Doctor but it does create something fans have been speculating for years especially after the Curse of the Fatal Death.
I did like the parallel between old who and new who and the use of St. Paul's Cathedral with the Cybermen. Even set up basically the same shot.
And Clara taking on the Doctor and threatening to destroy him and his TARDIS if he doesn't do as she wants him to do. The pain and the hurt made it almost hard to watch. That to me is the best scene she has ever done so far. The writing was crisp and the whole scene moved.
Poor Danny. Now we do know what happened that spooked him so much. And it is something that, unfortunately, haunts many a soldier. That scene also worked for me.
I did love the "delete" screen.
So we have all these different balls in the air. Let's hope that they can stick the landing next week.
