Short version

We went to New York Comic Con and had many adventures.

Harlan Ellison had a stroke but is doing well. His intellect is intact just like Peter’s was after his stroke.

Caroline got sick with a virus, which made her feel very miserable on Monday but she was back to fighting form by Tuesday and went to school.

My Father in Law was admitted to the hospital and Peter went up to Connecticut to help out and is still there now.

I am grateful for modern medicine.

Longer version with pictures after the cut.

This past weekend was NYCC at the Javitt’s Center in Manhattan. It, apparently, has surpassed SDCC for attendance. You can decide if that is a good or bad thing.

Our home base for the convention was table B5 in artist alley and yes we do get a good giggle over that placement. We were seated next to people we know and Peter S. Beagle was behind us pretty much like it was last year. Makes for a comfortable convention since we look out for each other.

Caroline and I, through the help of the good people who run the convention, got seats at the Once Upon a Time panel which was the only panel Caroline wanted to see. It was fun watching the episode with other fans. The reactions were great. Not so much the Q & A afterwards. Agendas were pushed and real questions were not asked. I felt sorry for the people on the panel because there was no way that they could answer those questions without sounding bad. Fandom you disappointed me.

Meanwhile Peter was doing something for Marvel and ran into this guy.

Peter David and Clark Gregg
(for the VI; On your left is Peter David. He is wearing a black polo shirt with the Crazy 8 logo. On the right is Clark Gregg who is wearing glasses, a black leather jacket and a t-shirt with some writing on it)

Peter reminded Mr. Gregg that they had met at the Epic Mickey release party at the Disney Store in Times Square. He did remember that encounter. They had a nice conversation and went onto their next events.

Convention magic is a special thing. It is close to Disney Magic at times. And then there is that rare occasion where they collide. We had one heck of a collision this year.

Peter was signing for a gentleman who had a couple of comics he wanted signed. When I looked at the guy I thought ‘Wow, he should cos-play the genie from Aladdin, he looks just like him.’ As he and his friend were getting ready to leave Peter noticed this stylized shirt that was a really cool Jafar and commented on it.

The gentleman who just got his comic signed informed us that his friend was the stage manager for Aladdin and he was the Genie. It took a moment for that to sink in. Peter asked him to repeat that. And the dime dropped for us. Peter told him that we loved his performance at the Tony Awards. Mr. Iglehart was surprised that we had seen that. Pictures were taken and tweeted and everyone got to their next appointment happy and with a good story.

I had a couple of puppets with me including my Nick Fury puppet that a lot of people took photos of over all three days. This one was taken by Elayne Riggs and is copyright her.

The next day was convention magic from the fans where a group of cos-players dressed up at the characters from Young Justice. Peter and Todd were over the moon with this group.

We did get out of Artist Alley and see the rest of the convention. The most impressive booth was the WETA booth.

Smaug watches the convention from on top of the booth. The cool thing was that Smaug’s eye would follow motion. Creepy but cool.

I got to talk to a lot of friends there, which was nice. I did have a couple of those ‘and you are?’ looks from fans when I was talking to comic book legends who are my friends as well. It is kind of fun in a weird way. Since Peter’s stroke I apparently have become more recognizable.

We found out about Harlan while we were at the convention. We didn’t really say anything at the time because it was not our news to tell. Peter has talked to Harlan twice since then and is going to see him when Peter goes out to LA later this month. I am not going to say much more than our thoughts are with Harlan and Susan. They are family to me.

Caroline had spent part of the weekend with us and part of it with her sister and her best friend’s birthday party. She had a great time but came down with a virus that kicked her pretty hard. Monday she spent most of it asleep on the couch. By Tuesday morning she was fever free and wanted to go back to school. I gave her cough medicine and let her attend but gave a heads up to her teachers.

Monday we also found out that my father in law Gunter was in the hospital. It became apparent that Peter needed to go up and give a hand to his sister with everything that was going on. So we quickly packed him up and got him on his way. Gunter is out of the hospital and home now but Peter is staying up until tomorrow so they can get some stuff in place.

I am sorting things out here. Today laundry and putting away the last of the convention stuff.

So there’s your update on us. How’s it going for you?

Harlan Ellison is another favorite of mine. I wish him the best in his recovery. The same for David's dad. It's good that he could go and be with his family.

Sometimes our fandom just bums me out. Why can't they be respectful when meeting the people who create and perform the show? It's one thing to vent online in closed comms or on our locked journals and another thing entirely to just unload on them in public. Was Jennifer M. there?

I'm glad you had such a nice time at the convention. I was going to go to one in Altamonte Springs but...well...my sister did her usual thing and I didn't get to go.

Caroline is tough! I love that she was ready and raring to go back to school.

Jennifer M was there and totally a sweetheart to all the fans even the ones acting like total dicks.

He was amazing at Genie.

I bet the James Monroe Iglehart(Genie) was super thrilled at being recognized by someone he liked back.
