Two projects MUST BE DONE before I depart for London.

And then there is the usual stuff that must be done before we depart so my next week is going to be a busy one. This includes making sure we have the various plugs and the like that we need to keep our electronics going.

This weekend Caroline and I are finishing up her science project so all she has to do is the write-up. We need to turn it in before we leave. It is going to take most of the week to gather the data and set up the experiment. We are creating water filters with recycled materials to see if we can clean water that would be then boiled and used for drinking. We figure that if we can put it together with things that you can find in poor areas, it would be a good thing to create since so many children die from bad water.

This morning it was hard to get out of bed. I have expressed before my dislike of daylight saving time and this morning I express it again. It is pointless.

Through Neil, I found out about WorldCon, Hugo presenters, and fandom’s dark secret of being haters. Apparently because of a few very vocal individuals, those sitting at the Hugo banquet rather than being entertained by Mr. Ross, who is a fan and a published author IN the genre, will get the usual awkward presentations that will be forgotten much like the winners of the Hugo. Most people outside of science fiction now know World Con and the Hugo awards now due to the publicity this is getting. Nice going a small number of people in fandom for setting fandom back about 20 years in people’s perception. For a group of people who declare that they are such forward thinkers, they have some things very backwards. Honestly we, being the fandom community, are not all social awkward and socially inept or this vindictive. Yes, I understand that Mr. Ross’ humor is not beloved by all but he has hosted other awards shows including comic book ones and there have been no complaints.

And that is something that is bothering me, people getting upset before anything happens. There are these big ruckuses that are a lot of noise about nothing. People are adamant that they are never going to do something before all the facts are in. And when it happens, everyone seems to forget what they were objecting to or was telling everyone that it would never work. We seem to spend a lot of time getting upset over trivial minutia that really doesn’t matter. I learned that in spades last year with Peter’s stroke and the aftermath, which is still ongoing.

I am looking forward to the second half of the season of Once Upon a Time which starts up tonight. I am tired of the fan over reaction to various story elements that may or may not be true. Yes my favorite character bit the dust in the last episode, but I am willing to wait and see what the writers are going to do with the aftermath rather than pout and declare I am never going to watch the show again. Again with the “if they do this then I am going to throw a tantrum problem”.

It is nice to watch Spring Training baseball.

I am grateful for weather that hints that spring is around the corner.

It sounds like you got a very one-sided version of the story. Mr. Ross has a history of sexual jokes (yes, even during 'other award shows'). Some people felt that was inappropriate for the venue. Instead of reassuring people that he understood the audience and would show the proper respect he called detractors "stupid". Add this to the fact that the announcement contained no word of who he was or why he was chosen for the honor (and it takes a LOT of googling to get his fan cred if you don't know what to look for) and the blame really goes both ways, with (imo) a heaping helping due to the committee who knew this would be controversial and still chose to announce it on twitter with no explanation and no warning of the controversy to Mr. Ross.

Ah, I came from the POV of that I knew exactly who Mr. Ross was and who his wife was which was part of my incredulity.

He doesn't hide his nerd card.

I guess my biggest objection was the ludicrous predictions of what he was going to say. Yes, he is known for crude and some times objectionable humor however he does tailor his remarks to the group. He has done very well in comic book circles.

If you google his name all you get is the controversy. I don't think it's unreasonable to predict that his 'stage' persona is how he will act on a stage, especially when given no evidence to the contrary. He didn't help the case by leaping to insults. Looking at him with all the evidence we have now I don't think he would have done a bad job, but the problem was that everyone was yelling at each other, not listening to concerns, and not actually providing evidence. It makes me sad that now this is a fault of 'the community' being insular and not also an issue with ignorance and how we rectify that problem (my choice: by educating, not by mocking and saying "well I knew, you're nobody if you didn't too").

You're coming to London? When and for how long? And are you coming over to Cardiff/Wales while you're here?

I got the info from the other end and I'm not impressed with the idea that "OMG! You scared off the Famous Person by being big meanies!"

This is one the takes I've read about it and I hope you'll consider it:

I have never said Seanan's name in connection of any of this. I know all this. I also know what I was reading from other people before Seanan got into it. That the focus has gone onto this one person is seriously wrong. It allows other online bullies to hide and I don't care how famous or infamous a person is. Bullying is wrong.

Edit!
