The trick was that I used the “wrong side” of the fabric
Some of my favorite pieces have been done that way. I started considering the other side of the fabric nearly twenty years ago when I was making a brocade bolero jacket to go with a velvet dress. Something made me flip the fabric in hand over and it was exactly what I was looking for! Now I don't do much sewing aside from faire garb but it's still a handy trick for bodices, especially with my characters love of but complete inability to correctly use color.
