Sadly, difference is as difference does. And so few people get that if you set yourself apart as different, you'll be treated that way (with all that may imply). I decided long ago to be happily out of the closet in all things fannish, and have never encountered a lick of trouble from folks. They know when I leave work to go to SF or RPG conventions (and some have scarily even learned my annual schedule and know when I go to which ones!) and it's never been a big deal.
It makes me kind of sad when I see people set themselves apart, and I wonder if it's out of fear, if they're trying to goad that negative response in the mundane world to justify their withdrawal, so they don't even need to try, y'know?
