One thing that has come out of my magical mystery tour of my health is that I have been informed that I need to avoid stress. This has lead to guffaws of laughter from many quarters.

Many of us have been in a crouched defensive position for so long I don’t think we know how to stand up.

There has been not great news on an international front or the country or the local area.

It seems just when I can take a real breath something else takes that breath away.

But now I have to make a conscious to take the time for me. Time to relax and regroup.

And that is not a selfish thing to do. It is self-preservation.

We have this idea that if we take time for ourselves before our long list of things we must and should do it done, that we are doing something wrong.

I believe that we need to change our thinking on that.

My gym time is my time but it cannot be my only time that is for me.

Multi-tasking is a bit of a myth. We have been informed that the only way to get through life is do as much as possible in the time we have allotted. Eventually we will get to retirement and then be able to do what we want to do.

Might have worked in the past but the model of working for one company and accruing a pension is no longer part of the American workforce norm.

Retirement is not something that I think I am going to have nor is Peter. Sure we have unusual career paths but the more people I talk to my age or even older, the more I hear that they are not retiring, if they can, until they are in their 70s. They can’t afford to.

So the time to enjoy life is in the now. Not as some promise down the road.

And one can be a responsible adult while still enjoying the world around them.

Take the time to do something that you want to do. Really want to do. Plan it out and make it yours. It is why we have hobbies and passions for things outside our stress bubble.

And don’t stress if it doesn’t seem productive. It is for you not anyone else. If it is playing a game or reading a book or writing a book or painting something or building something, it is your time and your activity.

Revisit your favorite episode of a TV show you love or reread a book that has great meaning to you. See a movie. Turn your phone off for an hour or so. Turn off the Internet.

Give yourself permission to just be in the moment.

I think we all need this.

I am grateful for the help I am given to de-stress.
