I was talking or rather instant messaging a buddy of mine who is a puppeteer. We were talking about this and that including a new show he is going to be working on and some crazy ideas that we will probably never execute. Then I got a message right after midnight that said, “Damn, it’s been 28 years now.” He didn’t have to say what the event was because he knew that I knew.

I was at the Yale Rep when I found out that Jim Henson had died. We were getting ready for a matinee of “Pygmalion”. I did my job but was pretty much a mess the rest of the time.

Jim Henson didn’t get me into puppetry but he showed me the possibilities of the art form in so many ways.

Because of his work this past weekend Peter got a puppet that I built to an actor as my way of saying thank you for their work that has brought me hours of entertainment. I received in return an autograph photo that says, “Kathleen, you made my weekend. Thank you-Matt Ryan”.

I have done that a number of times where I build a puppet for someone and get it to them. I have gotten hugs and thank you and this is the most awesome thing I have ever gotten. I have also made some life long friendships out of it and a lot of cool stories. Wouldn’t have done that if I hadn’t had Jim’s work in my life.

My time at the Center for Puppetry Arts is still among my favorite jobs. I made friends for life there. I got to see a bunch of cool puppet shows and work on a number as well. I learned a lot about building puppets in my time there and untangled more marionettes than I could count. Wouldn’t have happened if not for Jim and his foundation who gave money for the Center to exist.

I would not have Caroline in my life if not for Jim Henson. It was because of a puppet that I build that Peter and I met. The style of puppet I learned to construct at the Center for Puppetry Arts.

There are so many friends I have met because of puppets. So many stories and adventures that have come out of the puppets I have made. There is an entire track at DragonCon devoted to puppetry which would probable not exist without Jim. So much of my life is wrapped up in puppets and puppetry.

28 years ago we lost Jim Henson but we didn’t really. All those people who have gone on to do great things because of Jim and his work shows that in some way we haven’t. Call it the spirit of Henson that continues to give us the spark to create magic.

We miss you Jim Henson. We wonder what you would have done with the new CGI possibilities and puppetry. I bet it would have been amazing.

I am grateful that I met Jim Henson.
