Right now, as I am typing this, I am sitting at the Florida SuperCon in Miami. We have been here since Thursday. Peter has been signing autographs, participating in panels, and talking to fans. Caroline has been making new friends and playing video games with the new friends. I have been taking care of the table when Peter is at a panel, catching up with friends, and making new friends.
We are lucky that we have three chairs behind the table. We have been stuck with one chair making it hard for Caroline and me to sit and with two chairs where one of us has to be in motion or standing for the other two to sit. But this convention provided us with enough chairs that we can all sit comfortably.
I have been going to conventions since I was 12 so that’s almost 40 years of convention going. I have had some interesting conversations over the past couple of days with various people that I know about what has happened in that time.
I look around from where I am sitting and I see families strolling by. I see kids in costumes having fun with other kids and adults in costumes. There is a group of Deadpools and Spidermans that are going around in a pack having their pictures taken with various people. Wives and girlfriends wearing comic and movie related shirts. A variety of Doctors both in rengeneration, age of the cosplayer, and gender. I see a lot of anime characters which I know some and don’t know others.
There is a buzz of excitement about the place. People talking with authors, artists, actors, and the like who they have great respect for. Heck, I was almost tongue tied when I got a chance to talk to Caroll Spinney and show him my puppets. He gave me some great advice about some other ways of setting up the head for the puppeteer and complimented me on my ability to make faces come alive. Peter says I was walking on air the rest of the day.
I have watched as people have come up to Peter and told them how much his writing has meant to them. They tell stories of things that he wrote that changed their lives or gave them hope or made them feel better about themselves. He had inspired other people to take up the pen and write. It is touching to see how much people care about his health and inquire how he is doing from the stroke he had now a year and a half ago (where does the time go?).
I sat next to George Perez and caught up on news and gossip from his end of the world. I watching him interact with the fans and do some incredible sketches in such a short time. He even did one for me.

(For the VI: This is a black and white drawing done by George Perez of Dr. Strange. Dr. Strange has his right hand out with mystical energy surrounding the fingers)
I have gone and sat in on panels that Peter has done and listen to stories from both him and others about various topics. I missed the one with Tim Zahn and him about playing in other people’s sandboxes but I heard it was a hoot.
I have had people come up to me and tell me that they appreciate the time I took to blog about Peter’s stroke and the aftermath. I apparently both educated and entertained. I know for a fact that my blog about how to spot a stroke saved at least two people’s lives.
I just did a walk around the dealer’s room and ran into an old friend I haven’t seen in at least 15 years. He has kept up with my life through the Internet but it was nice just talking about what we have been doing since we last saw each other. Since we last talked I have gotten married and had a child along with all the career stuff I have been doing. He was up on what had happened in my life because of Peter’s web log. He doesn’t have a chair in his booth.
It is interesting to have gone from fan to pro and from one side of the table to the other. I can now sit and watch the convention walk by from my chair.
