I have been trying to keep up with the word count for the NaNoWriMo contest. So far I have been able to do so but it has been a fight with myself at times to do so. My goal is 1700 per day because I can do the math in my head to know where I am while I writer.

I write faster in the morning than the evening and trying in the afternoon is a total disaster. It seems that between 1 and 5 my brain goes elsewhere. So evening allows me to catch up but it is a hard slog. The afternoon is also when a lot of other things have to happen around the house. So I do best before breakfast or after dinner.

I can’t read and write at the same time. My casually reading has gone down to nill including magazines and newspapers. My book reading is probably off the table until the end of the month. I knew that this happened to me from previous times that I have been working on a writing project. I have no idea why my brain compartmentalizes like this but it just does.

My kitchen is cleaner when I write. When I do get stuck or just can’t seem to get the next word out, I tend to go off and do some short task that needs to be done to clear out my head. Folding laundry, doing laundry, picking up a room, or doing the dishes seems to kick me back to writing. I just have to watch that I don’t find myself using these tasks as an excuse not to write.

I find it hard not to go back and edit what I have already written. I am forcing myself to go on rather than ditz at the beginning of the story.

I am grateful that I have gotten as much done as I have so far.
