I heard the news yesterday and I was saddened by it. As the time has gone on, other odd facts are being whispered across the internet. I don't think we are ever going to know the whole truth but if you consider the person, it seems kind of apropos.

The actor tried to separate his private life from his public life for many reasons including who his family was. His autobiography "Endless Highway" is a very interesting read about the man and his life and what he felt were his problems in life. If you really want to know about the man, this is the book to read.

My first encounter with him was my sending him a puppet of Caine through a mutual friend. He sent back some pictures of him with the puppet grinning. He really liked it. Years later at a DragonCon, I had him sign my Caine puppet form me and we had a very nice discussion about his work over the years. He was impressed that I had seen "the Long Riders" in the theater. I shook his hand and thanked him for the years of enjoyment he had given me. He thanked me for the puppet and told me to keep up the good work since I had a talent for puppetry.

We have a number of friends in common and I got in touch with a couple after I heard the news. They are going to pass on my sympathies to the family. I have to say that everyone is saddened but not that surprised. One person told me that honestly considering some of his behavior in the past, they were surprised that he had made it to 72 with his mind and body relatively intact.

I am grateful that I did get to meet David and that he enjoyed his puppet.
