puppetmaker: (Cirque)
I am an old Cirque fan. I go back to when I accidentally ran across them while I was wandering in New York during my time at the YSD. I was uplifted and amazed by what I saw. It showed me possibility and the strength of the human spirit. Since then I have seen every touring show and the permanent show at Disney (La Nouba). I have not seen any of the Vegas shows yet.

Yesterday the family trooped to Randall's Island Park to the Grand Chapiteau and saw a great show. Caroline loved it. I enjoyed watching her reaction to what was going on in front of her. The look of amazement and the giggles of joy warmed my heart.

The show harkens back to earlier shows like Nouvelle Expérience or Saltimbanco. There are many things going on at the corners that add to the main act. The clowns are back and in fine form which is not a great shock considering that the director was a clown in the touring company of Nouvelle. The acts are stripped down to minimal equipment. The one big apparatus used at the top of Act 2 were the Devil’s Rings or the Wheel of Death which amazed and astounded. The costumes are beautiful and the set is amazing. Although the first time they put the bataclan into motion all I could think was ‘Exterminate! Exterminate!’ since it looked like a very large Dalek.

Cirque is a touchstone for me. It renews and uplifts me. It shows me what the human body can do and makes me think about my art in a different way. I saw the first show at a rather low point in my life and it helped me through that time. Since then my life has had its up and downs but Cirque seems to show up just when I need it. I find myself thinking of creative possibilities and what I want to do next.

I am grateful I could watch my daughter discover the magic of Cirque for herself.
