There are these commercials promoting a site called Hulu in which semi-famous people (Seth McFarlan; Eliza Dushku; Dennis Leary; Alec Baldwin) tell us that we need to use Hulu to turn our brains into pudding so they can suck it out our ears because they are aliens and that’s the way they roll. They are quite funny and have raised Hulu’s profile on the Internet.
I was reading an article in this weeks edition of New York magazine by Sam Anderson entitled “The attention crisis and why distraction may actually be good for you” about the amount of information we are bombarded with and the amount of information we go out and seek. We have become a nation of Sesame Street kids with the attention span of a Labrador puppy. We multi-task with abandonment and one of those things we have seemed to abandon is focus and, in some ways, it is melting and re-organizing our brains into that pudding the aliens want.
Focus is an interesting thing. It can be very fluid and very illusive. We are distracted by so many things and the electronics that we own are making it more so. I find myself pulling out my iPhone and checking on things when I am waiting for something. I could just stand there and think but I find my hand going to my pocket and whoosh I am on the Internet checking my e-mail and my facebook and my websites to see if anyone tried to get in touch with me. It is a skill that I feel like I am losing.
I know I can focus. I do it when I am working on a puppet or a doll or a costume or another crafty thing. I do it when I work with Caroline on homework or reading her a story or doing a craft with her or playing a game. But my focus can become split rather fast. I am distracted by the world around me.
I am an information sponge. In college I use to help people find information on the various topics of papers and I was very good at it. This was before the Internet when we had to go to the card catalogue to find information on books. On the web we are encourage to research and gather information but at some point we need to do something with all the information that we have gathered from the far reaches of the wilds of the web. And that is the sticking point for me sometimes.
The sad thing is that I have gathered information on how to deal with this problem. I haven’t acted upon it but I have gathered it.
So I have decided that this is something I want to work on. Focus. I want to get some of the projects out of my head and into this realm.
I am grateful for the little focus I still have.
