Fa-fa-fa-fashion
May. 14th, 2009 08:48 amThe other day Caroline wanted to wear her new summer dress, which she is quite proud of. I said she could if she put a t-shirt under it since it was still a little too cold for just spaghetti straps. She looked at me as if I had grown a second head and said, "But Mom, that wouldn't be fashionable." It took me a good minute to come back with the I'm your Mom and I say so because I was so stunned to hear that phrase come out of my daughter's mouth.
I got into "Project Runway" about the third season when a friend decided to try to do the challenges in a week just to see if she could do it. She had auditioned for that season and had made it through the first pass or so but not onto the final show. I think she was dunned for being a costume designer with a good fashion sense and not a fashion designer. Personally I think they would benefit from having a few more costume designers in the mix. I really enjoyed what I saw and it became something that Ariel and I watched together and talked about. This past season Caroline started commenting on what she liked and didn't like.
We started watching "Make me a Supermodel" because they would show that before "Project Runway". Ariel liked the pretty boys but had been cheering for Holly who won the show. We have been watching the second season too. So far Ariel's absolute favorites are still in the mix but it is getting closer. I find the measuring and obsessing over weight a little disturbing especially when one of the model who is pretty much a normal shape is informed that if she was not on the show and had walked in to the modeling offices, she would be turned down flat because of her weight and shape. What kind of message is that sending out into America? We talk about plus size model but a plus size is a 12 at most which is a normal size for a small % of women in America.
I am lukewarm so far about "The Fashion Show". The concept of doing a fashion show a week is interesting but I wonder how long they can keep it up. They do have some real characters but that is not why I watched "Project Runway". I watched it to see what these designers could do given a set of parameters. Also I miss Tim. Isaac Mizrahi is no Tim Gunn but I am willing to give them a season to prove to me why I should watch it. I do plan to watch "Project Runway" on Lifetime later this summer.
Caroline has declared that she won't were her new dress unless she can wear it the way she wants to wear it. I see something here that I have a feeling is going to come up as she grows up and has her fashion sense which may not be mine but I don't really have a fashion sense as many of my friends can attest to. I tend to go for what is comfortable for me or practical. For a while I think I didn't own a piece of clothing that was not black.
I am grateful that my daughter can make me smile.
