When the Grass isn't Greener
Jul. 17th, 2008 09:34 amI know there are places with worse water problems and lack of rain but we seem to be in a bubble here on Long Island since the past couple of rainstorms have passed either south or North of us after dumping on Queens. We got back from Shoreleave to a lawn that looked rather parched. Simple solution was to give it some water or at least the front so that we looked more like the other houses around us. Should be an easy task right?
We hooked up the system and had two major leaks at two joints. I cleaned the screen that fits into the sprinkler which solved one problem but the other lead was due to one of the couplings being bent just enough that it couldn't make a good seal. This was an old hose anyway so Peter went and bought another hose. We hooked up the new hose to the spigot out side the house and got all kinds of back spray. We needed a different type of hook-up so we could get the water where we wanted it to go. I went to the hardware store and picked up the parts we needed for the spigot. Yesterday afternoon I hooked everything up and checked down the line. There were no leaks but the sprinkler stopped moving back and forth. I tried every trick I knew to get it to work but it would only work from a fixed position. This morning I tried moving the sprinkler by hand to see if it was caught and I felt something give. I started everything up and this time the whole system worked and I watered the front lawn. Now let's see if everything works this evening when we get to another part of the lawn and Caroline can play in the sprinkler. Unless it rains.
I have two tasks I need to get done today. I'll fit in all the other things that just are part of living at Casa David entail. The nice thing is that if I get stuck on one, I can go to the other and work on it until I get unstuck. Both are on my "just bloody get it done people are waiting on you" list which is rather lengthy at this point but I think in a day or so I can cut it down to something manageable.
So off to start Task 1 and then Task 2 and see Hancock this afternoon while the girls see Kit Kitterage which was our plan about two weeks ago when Caroline and her bug bites put the kibosh on that.
I am grateful that we did get the front lawn mostly watered this morning.
