How many clicks does it take
Jun. 24th, 2008 10:51 amThere is an article today in the New York Times about a case in which the lawyer is using Google data to prove that community interests include adult material. A Community clicks while Google ticks. It is an interesting idea using the Internet searches of a community to show what the community standards really are rather than what they say they are.
I googled with the best of them. It is my first go to when I want to find something on the Internet. And until now I hadn't thought that each of my searches was being recorded by Google. But considering that when I start to type in a search term, Google tries to help me with previous things I have looked at, I should have realized that this was happening. I think if you broke down my searches you would find a lot of them have to do with things that either Peter or I are working on, a bunch of my hobbies, and things that Ariel and Caroline enjoy.
Pretty standard googling over all but apparently we are not standard because we don't look for porn on the Internet or Nascar or how to grow certain types of plants, but Ariel and I do look for cheats for our Nintendo DS games. Trying to create a community standard based on what people do in their houses in an interesting idea because what people do in the privacy of their own home can be very different than what they say they do and believe.
The lawyer is trying to get Google to break the clicks down further but Google is resisting and with good reason. We are told to be careful with our personal information on the Internet and what we look for on the Internet can be very personal indeed.
Personally I am not worried about what I look for because what I looked is so boring to most people. And by this point I expect that the ads I see in Google will match my interests but that doesn't really bother me either. But I will think before I click knowing that what I look for is being held onto and counted.
I am grateful for Google because it makes my searching easy.
