Missing from my Photo Collection
May. 31st, 2006 11:06 amCostume Con was this past weekend. I did not attend this year but plan to some year real soon. There is a lot of discussion among the group about the convention and people are posting links to their photos they took at the convention. Unfortunately one of the nice people in the group lost quite a bit of camera equipment and the laptop he had downloaded most of the photos he took into.
But all these photos lead to an interesting observation from a couple of people. When you are in the costume, you tend not to get photos of your costume. You have to get someone else to take pictures of it especially when it is in motion. A number of members of the group lamented the fact that they don't have pictures of their costumes at all. The only shots I have of Shleper the Leper is because of a couple of fans who gave copies to Peter. I wish I had gotten a picture of the make-up BEFORE she went on stage and tore a portion of her face off. I made us take the time for Baby Dance and Depp Charge.
There are a couple of costumes I did so long ago it has passed into fan memory and I have no record of them. I wish I did. Both were at Atlanta Fantasy Fair in the mid 1980s when it was still at the Omni Hotel and the masquerade was still held at the civic center next to it. One was the X-Men vs. the Hellfire Club which changed the rules at the costume call since it use to be that everyone participating got a free membership if you won Best in Show but we were about 14 people I think so after that they limited it to 4 memberships. I was a no-face Hellfire minion in that one. I got thrown across the stage by Wolverine at one point. That one was "fun" because Colossus misstepped in the fight choreography and I got thrown a little harder than we had practiced. The bruises eventually faded.
The second was about 2 years later I think. We did the New Mutants vs. the Hellions and I was Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage aka Psyche aka Moonstar depending as to what issue you picked up. We did a send up of the chant "Taste Great"/"Less Filling" which was a staple of the contests at the civic center. Balcony was always "Taste Great" and the floor was always "Less Filling". This then had Magneto who was the headmaster for the New Mutants at the time and The White Queen who ran the Hellions come out and ground us all for underage drinking. I think I still have that costume at my parents' house or in a trunk up here somewhere.
I have one shot of my first World Con costume. I was Blake at the end of Blake's 7 after the close encounter with Avon. I didn't win anything but then most people there hadn't seen the end of the show yet. Premature costuming and my sketch was non-existent. I wasn't that good at the sketch part of the costume until Peter and I became a couple. He is really good at figuring out not only the sketch but the choreography as well. All those dance numbers we have done over the years at Shoreleave and Farpoint were directed by Peter.
Then there is Vincent from Beauty and the Beast I did with my buddies Jeff and Angelo. We did it at a Magnum-Opus Con when it was at the Iron Works (I think it was called) south of Atlanta. The show had come out that year. Jeff and Angelo are brilliant make-up artists and costumers. We decided to make me Vincent after a smart-ass comment by a friend of ours who had played Rogue in the X-men vs. Hell Fire Club. He said that men can play women but women can't play men. So in about a week which was my Spring Break that year from the YSD we put together the costume and make-up. Dressed my little sister up as Catherine and amazed a number of people. We did the whole thing off of a couple of Starlog photos and 4 episodes of the TV series. George R.R. Martin was there and he was pretty impressed with the whole thing. He was really interested in the make-up since ours looked great and took a lot less time than Ron's. Of course Ron's had to look good under camera. Mine had to look good to the audience. He gave us the "best Vincent I have seen yet" award. Now here is the sucky thing. We all forgot our cameras. There is no record of that costume in our files.
So those are my missing costume photos which are only missing because I never took any of those costumes but now wish I had.
