May Day 2006
May. 1st, 2006 09:18 amOn May 1st I always listen to Julie Andrews singing "The Lusty Month of May" from Camelot. For some reason it gets me in the mood for the month which usually starts out as Spring and ends as Summer.
May Day has multiple meanings to me. As a child I would see the Russians marching their military might around on May 1st and be told by the news that there were scary missiles that could hit the US under the tarps that the Russians don't want us to see.
Then in grade school I learned about May Day and the crowning of the May Queen along with the maypole and other traditions of the holiday. I liked that much better then tanks. In college I learned about how some pagan groups celebrate the day within their religion. Which dovetailed nicely with the May Day celebrations I had learned about so long go.
Today May Day takes on another meaning as immigrants and their supporters try to make a point by not going to work but marching against the bills that are currently in the house and senate. At 12:16 there are supposed to be human chains created all over the country as a silent protest. It will be interesting to see the news coverage on this and the reaction from the general population. It will also be fun to see what the Daily Show and the Colbert Report does with the footage and the news story.
The landscape has taken on a shade of green from all the tree pollen. It is nice to see all these trees waking up from their long winter's nap but for those who suffer during this season you have my sympathies. So yellow-green is the color for the day with the wind moving it rapidly through the air.
So Have a Merry May Day.
I am grateful for anything constructive I get done today.
