Happy Birthday Mom!
Mar. 5th, 2006 09:24 amToday is my mother's birthday. If you met her next to me you would be inclined to think she was my sister not my mother. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. The nice thing is that most people tend to guess my age much younger than my actual age. I've had to pull out my driver's license to prove I am as old as I say I am. Good genetics run in the family.
My mother taught Nursing for over 30 years and raised 4 children who all turned out pretty well. She did all this with love, discipline and humor. I have always known where I stood with my Mom. If she said No then that was the end of it. I always told her that if she wanted me to I would go to her first class of the year and tell them, "Hi I'm Kathleen. Dr. O'Shea's eldest. I just want to tell you that when Dr. O'Shea says No she means No. Not I'll think about it or if you whine enough you will change my mine. She means No and there is no changing her mind. Accept it and move on." My mother can also speak volumes with one raised eyebrow. You thought Leonard Nimoy had that trick down? He has nothing on my mother. We call it the look and it speaks volumes.
My mother has always taught us by example. She and my father never argued in front of us. What one said went for both. No confusing there. She is the peacemaker in the group of strong will individuals. She kept up her house and after her kids. We behaved in church for the most part and are good citizens in the community. I don't think I heard her swear until I was in my 20s and when she did it shocked the heck out of me.
She loves gardening. She has worked very hard on all her various plant beds. I can remember many a red ripe tomato still warm from the sun in my salad. She grew up on a farm and has a love of the land. In the spring the various gardens she made are sights to behold. The colors mix well making for a visual feast.
She is a great cook. On top of that she is very aware of nutrition so we had pretty healthy meals. No one can match her hollandaise sauce and I have yet to have a better beef bourguignon. My favorite dessert she makes are her Baked Alaskas.
She sewed my play clothes when I was young. I would pick out the cloth and she would make me these jumpers for the summer that were very sturdy. She taught me a lot about sewing just by watching her. She encouraged me to learn how to sew for years and I finally picked it up and am grateful I did. She gave me her sewing machine. It is still my main sewing machine and is an iron workhorse.
She has always been there for me in good time and bad. She could make boo-boos all better with a kiss a magical talent that I now use with my little girl. When I broke up with my first boyfriend she listened to my sobbing and moaning about it. She has always listened to me. She imparted her love of mystery books to me. From her I first got Dorothy Sayers and Agatha Christie among many others. Some girls are afraid that they will grow up and turn into their mothers. I would be proud and honored to do so.
