Schadenfreude
Dec. 16th, 2005 08:53 amThere is a song in Avenue Q called Schadenfreude. Schadenfreude according to the dictionary means pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others. It literarily translated into English as damaged joy. The explanation in the song is that you feel better about yourself and situation if you see that others are worse off than you. I got to thinking about in because of the transit strike which still may or may not happen. I was thinking about all the people I know who work in the city and live outside the city as well as all my buddies in the city proper. The news has been nothing but doom and gloom about how awful the commute is going to be if the strike happens. I feel pity for what everyone may have to go through in the near future but I feel good about the fact that right now I am not trying to figure out how I am going to get into the office or what my contingency plans are going to be.
The weather here right now stinks. It is that cold wet rain that is almost ice but not quite. It seeps the cold into your bones and you think it will never leave. The only positive here is that it is not ice and the day is supposed to shape up to be a pretty nice one once the rain leaves.
Depending on a lot of factors including the weather, the transit strike, and my health, Peter and I may or may not be going into the Marvel Christmas Party. The last one I went to was about 8 years ago. So we'll see how the day goes. The health issue is sort of the big one right now. If I am still trying to cough up a lung, we're not going.
It is disconcerting to pull up your iTunes expecting to hear Depeche Mode and you get They Might Be Giants. You are going for moody Goth music and you get upbeat accordions. Makes you reassess why you were going for other kind of music. They Might Be Giants is in my 10 ten of bands I love and will buy their new album the day it comes out discount be darned. Most of the bands on this list don't exist as bands any more so the number of must buys has reduced in the past 20 years but there are still a few.
I am grateful that I don't have to worry about the transit strike except in the abstract.
