Citizen Voter
Dec. 7th, 2005 09:39 amIt is amazing the amount of paper and packing materials one birthday party can create. I just put out the paper recycling and a majority of it is from Caroline's party. Boxes that presents were in and were shipped in. Wrapping paper the presents were wrapped in. Boxes from the bakery and grocery store for the food and the cake. All this is now sitting out at the curb along with the usual stacks of papers and boxes that filter in and out of this house. Plastics is next week and the bins are almost full.
Caroline and I had fun at Mommy and Me. It was a delayed opening because most of the schools were on a delay because of the snow and slippery conditions. The class was a bit smaller than it normally is. Caroline was being Ms. Barbara's helper during circle time. This kept her engaged so she didn't run off as often. By the time I was driving the main roads were dry and the secondary roads were clear if damp. I have a feeling there was a lot of ice on the secondary roads this morning where the water did not evaporate. She was much more talkative with her teacher and the other kids.
Not much else got done yesterday other than some more picking up. I think today I am going to start my next project today. I need to find a pattern I put in my studio for something I want to try. We'll see how it turns out. I am fighting a cold I think. Peter has one he is trying to get rid of. Caroline seems OK and is not sniffing a lot. Ariel's allergies are acting up so she is sniffing a lot and we are trying to sort out whether it is a cold or the allergies.
Ariel and I had an interesting discussion on the census and immigration. The number of seats that a state has in the House are determined by the number of people in a state. Currently the census included both legal and illegal immigrants which some are complaining skews the numbers so California gains and Ohio loses. So they want to change to rules that for representative only citizens be counted. Which is a sticky situation in itself. Now there are others that are advocating that not only should everyone be counted but immigrants both legal and illegal should have a say in the government since they are living here too or at least at the local level. I think everyone should be counted in the census and that should be how the house is divided up but I draw the line at non-citizens voting. We can't vote in other countries elections because we just happen to be living there at the time because we are not citizens even on the local level. Voting is a right bestowed on citizens of a country. Not a citizen then you can't vote. It has worked for years. If you are a citizen then you should exercise your right to vote. It is one of the most powerful rights you have.
Also for the snow birds in Florida pick one place as your place of residence and vote there. Being able to vote in all the local elections in the two places you live is illegal according to US laws. Someday I hope they do get the voting database working so we can weed you out of our local elections since you don't want us to have a better library or schools because you have two houses you are paying taxes on so you don't want to pay a penny more. Also if you vote with an absentee ballot and then where you are living I hope they find you out since the rules are one vote per voter not per place of residence.
I am grateful that I can and do vote in both local and national elections.
