Ren Faire 2005
Sep. 12th, 2005 08:24 amThere was this guy I sort of knew. He was someone who rode the train into the city every morning. He worked at some sort of trading company and had for many years. His passion outside of work was boating. He and his wife would sail for a much of the summer as his or her job would allow. He, according to reports, had a really beauty of a sailboat. He was going to retire and take that sailboat were ever they wanted to go. He wanted to spend more time with his grandchildren who lived somewhere south. He was supposed to retire at the end of August but his firm threw absurd amounts of money at him to stay on two more weeks so he could finish training his successor. He worked at the World Trade Center high enough in the building to have a beautiful view of the world around him. I remember on that Tuesday one of his buddies was joking with him about retiring and that he was going to get bored real fast. He is one of the ones who didn't make it out. His will be the face that I associate that day with. I was thinking about him yesterday when I was walking around the Ren Faire. I hope he is at peace.
The New York Renaissance Faire runs from August to September. We made the mistake one year of going in August when it was way too hot for all of us. We tend to go one of the last two weeks in September. Next week Peter will be in South Dakota for a conference so Ariel and I went yesterday and Peter worked and played with Caroline. They have added more vendors to the Faire. Some are satellite stores for the bigger shops allowing for more people to browse the goods they sell. The Faire is good at creating a little competition but they don't allow two many of one kind of goods. There are more clothing shops but the variety, as much as you can have in the Renaissance, is greater and the prices are better but still not cheap. The food is no longer concentrated in one area. The back end of the property has a number of food shops now. This lightens up the concentration of people in one area and allowed for more traffic for other parts of the Faire. According to the Merchants I have seen year after year, it has been a pretty good year. For one thing there has been only a little rain in August and that was in the middle of the week so the weather was in their favor. Also the numbers of visitors was up all during the Faire. I can believe that. We got there rather early and just got into the preferred parking.
Ariel and I checked out our favorite shops and some of the new ones. I got my hair braided. I'm still deciding if I like it or not. It does look different. We spent a lot of time in the paper shop. I think they may have a new owner or the owner revamped the goods in the shop. There was a lot there that would be fun to have. Ren Faire garb is something we look at but for the most part I can make what costumes we are going to need. We saw some of the performances. Most of them were happening on top of each other in the afternoon. There were a greater variety of those too. My one suggestion to the Faire is that it might be time to retire Robin and come up with some other scenario for the theme.
Also the yellow jackets were bad. I mean REALLY bad this year. Apparently Sunday was better than Saturday but we ended up buying incense to keep the yellow jackets at bay and be able to drink a soda or even water without having to get a yellow jacket out of the drink first. Neither of us was stung but apparently the incidents of stings where way up this year.
About 4 Ariel and I both had our fill of the festival and the yellow jackets so we bailed. The drive to the faire was in record time for us. The return saw traffic that added an hour to the drive. Some of the bridges have absurd merges. Most of the drivers were polite but a few jerks that think they are entitled to the right of way can tie things up for the rest of us for extended periods of time.
I am grateful for the visit to the Faire.
