Crescent City Con Day 2
Aug. 7th, 2005 10:27 amIt was a very busy day yesterday. Peter had a number of panels as did I. A couple of the kids organized KidCon for all the children under the age of 13. Ariel helped them. Caroline spent time with all of us at various points of the day. Some of the time was good and some not so good. If I was on a panel by myself then she could crawl into my lap or running around the room. If it was a number of other people and me, I had to pass her off to either Ariel or Peter. She was in a Mommy only mood which didn't make it easy for them. She also hit a point where she needed a nap in the worst way but she didn't want to go to sleep. Peter took her in hand and got her to nap.
We had breakfast with Marv Wolfman and another friend of our T.A. Chafin (who plays the Mad Scientist every year at Mystery Trekkie Theater at Shoreleave). Marv and Alan are both old radio show buffs so they compared collections. I had a nice chat with Marv catching up on about 2 years worth of news.
Ariel went off to KidCon and I spent some time playing with Caroline including a few games of "chase Caroline around the hotel." My first panel was about costuming and presentation. It was lightly attended so we went to tossing costuming war stories around. It was fun. The next panel was about what to look for before you sign the book deal. That was the one where Caroline had her major meltdown and Peter had handle it. I think that we gave the audience a lot to think about and some of it was information that I think they hadn't heard before.
I checked in on the girls. Peter had finally gotten Caroline to sleep. I went to hear Peter’s reading. He read the Spike Comic (out next week I believe) and a few other pieces. I ran to one of the local restaurants to pick up dinner. Costume contest was fun. Peter and I were judges along with Richard and Wendy Pini and Jason Fisher. Wendy and Barbara Hambly did a sketch before the contest called “50 isn’t fatal” and they belly danced for the crowd. They were very good at it and the audience loved it. We judged the contest in under 7 minutes which was not hard since there were only 10 adult entries but you do have to go over all of them. We gave each of the kids prized and 4 for the adult groups.
Wendy, Richard, Barbara, Marv and Ariel went off to get something to eat while I went off to my next panel about how not to get published, tales from the slush pile. Peter and Caroline were in attendance since Caroline didn't want me out of her sight. It went well. My fellow panelist was Charles Gramlich who was able to talk about the academic and non-fiction side of not getting published. Caroline almost behaved herself but the audience forgave her since she is only 2 and 1/2.
Peter took Caroline back to the room and I stayed for the panel with Marv Wolfman and Andy Fox. Andy wrote this wonderfully funny novel called 'Fat White Vampire Blues' that I was first reader on at Del Rey. Since then he has written a sequel called 'The Bride of the Fat White Vampire'. It was a fun panel talking about vampires they have written. Afterwards Peter and I did a swing through the party floor, came back to our room, turned on Monk, and promptly fell asleep.
I am grateful to all the people who put on this convention.
