Happy May Day or Beltane or what you wish to call today. If you are jumping over bonfires please do so carefully.

Caroline Update:
Thank you for all your kind wishes, prayers, energy, and good thoughts. She is much better. Her appetite is back and her body doesn’t seem to be rebelling again her anymore. She is playing with her blocks by building really high towers and then knocking them over with many giggles. She is returning to her Carolineness. We were going to the Laurie Burkner concert but since Caroline’s immune system is on the mend we are going to pass. Which is not a bad thing since the rain is coming down in teacups and shows no signs of letting up.

In today’s Newsday (Long Island Edition) the Fanfare section (Arts and Leisure for most) has a cover article on FanFic. It is not a bad little article and they even have a useful glossary for those who have never heard of this phenomenon. They even touch on the “Mary Sue” form of fanfic. Over all it is a pretty balanced article that doesn’t make every fanfic author sound like a loon. They also have a lot of websites and links for more information for those who hadn’t a clue this was going on.

A lot of current authors began in fanfic. Peter wrote a few himself and self-published them in fanzines. I have written fanfic mostly Dr. Who related. After I was hired by Del Rey, I stopped both writing and reading fanfic for various reasons including that I had enough to read at work. I stopped writing because it was strongly suggested that since I was now a professional within the publishing field it might be a good idea not to do so. Some of my stuff is still probably floating out there on the internet. Most of my writing now is my own characters when I find the time to write. I think fanfic was a good place for me to start as a writer. I received a lot of feedback that helped me hone my skills. I was one of those authors that didn’t go off in a snit if someone didn’t like something. I learned some good lessons in structure and plotting from writing fanfic.

I am grateful for the experience of writing fanfiction.
