I saw the Thursday performance of Ariel’s middle school production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof”. This was the junior edition of the play. The JR editions are specifically made for schools to perform with a shorter show and fewer songs or at least verses. I think this gives the teachers a fighting chance of getting something up on stage that the school can enjoy without having to sit through a prolonged version of a show that can get longer when the chairs are metal with thin padding.

Ariel is playing Golde who is the wife of Tevye which is basically the female lead. She did very well. She had her lines down and did a good job singing her songs. The rest of the cast did well too. Kenny, who played Tevye, managed to put more emotion into the role than I thought possible for a 13 year-old. He had a little trouble with the pick-up for a few of the songs but I think that was more because he couldn’t hear the cue than he forgot it.

Ariel looked like she was having a lot of fun. I think this has been a good experience for her. She does have more profession experience than most of the other kids as well as a family that is very stage savvy. So far, knock on wood, she hasn’t lost her shoe or her microphone which has happened to her in the last two school productions she has been in. I don’t think the loss of a shoe is going to happen since she is wearing lace-up boots. I am still crossing my fingers on the microphone.

Her last two shows are today. Tomorrow the rest of the relatives return to their various places and I will have a little bit of time to figure out what next. I have been glad to see everyone this week. It has been nice to catch up on news in person rather than by e-mail or on the phone. I have a few things to pick up around the house this morning and I will be ready for company this afternoon.

This has been a packed week. I got up this morning and thought that a week ago I was on my way into the city with about 6 inches of snow on the ground for my doll making class. It seemed further back in the month.

I am grateful for time with family.
