These are probably going to be short this week considering all I have to do and I have visitors all week. Next Monday I should be back to a “normal” schedule with my usual ramblings.

The Froud Class
Wow! I haven’t done anything that in years. I learned more in two days from that than I think I have in about 4 years of doll making. No secrets were withheld. She talked about the process that Brian, Toby (who was there with her), and she use to get their ideas and execute them. She showed us how she made a doll from idea to finished product. In the two-day stretch, I sculpted head, hands and feet, built a doll body, and “fleshed” him out. I still have hair and costume to go. I like the little fella. I will have to put him on hold till next week when things calm down around here. Overall I think it was the best money I spent on continuing education since I took that puppetry class from Peter Hart.

Avenue Q
That was fun. Peter asked me if I had a chance at tickets for Spamalot or Avenue Q which would I go see? I have to put a big “it depends” on that answer. They are apples and oranges in some ways and just alike in others. Both throw the PC book out the window but Avenue Qs sails a little further. I feel I can take Ariel to see Spamalot and I have to wait a couple of years for Avenue Q due to some of the more adult content. The puppets were great and the puppeteers were fine. The other actors were very good too especially the actress playing Christmas Eve a Japanese immigrant with two masters degrees in social work and no clients. It makes more sense in the context of the show. The songs were great. The show started with “It sucks to be me” and went on to such numbers, as “Everyone is a little bit racist “to” It’s OK to be gay.” Sesame Street this is not and there are about a dozen signs telling you that fact all over the theater, in the program, and on the souvenir program.

Food Choices in New York
I noticed that more and more restaurants along restaurant row are selling fix priced dinner. I had dinner at a very nice French restaurant before going to Avenue Q. There were also more South American establishments than I remember last time I walked down the row. I think I’ll try one of them next time I find myself getting dinner in the city by myself.

Homecoming
I came home to an empty house. Peter had taken the girls to a birthday part for their cousin in Connecticut and was driving back from that event. Caroline was asleep when they drove up but she woke up when Peter took her out of the car. She saw me standing in the door and her face lit up and her body leaned in my direction. I got hugs, kisses, and pats on the back until she went to bed. Peter put her on the phone when she would do the mama chant and I would talk to her. She managed to convey to me a lot of what she was up to. More than I though she could.

One strange thing did happen last night. Caroline woke up about 2:15 screaming. We thought it was because she was scared that Mommy and Daddy were gone. But even seeing both of us didn’t stop her howling. I put her down and she scooted down the stairs to her place on the sofa. She didn’t want anything on her but her pink blanket. Peter gave her a bottle and sat with her until she fell asleep again. According the Peter the cats were circling her (he felt like they were protecting her from something) until she went back to sleep then they dispersed to their usual sleeping places. He took her up to bed and she slept until 8ish.

I am grateful for everything I learned and everyone I met this weekend.
