All in All, Not a Bad Night’s work...
Feb. 13th, 2005 10:47 amI did get to see some of the convention. A lot of it depended on Miss Caroline’s mood. I got a really cool book called The Creatures of FarScape written by Joe Nazzaro. He was kind enough to sell me copy that was signed by a number of the people from The Creature Shop which is really cool for me to have since I have admired these people’s work for years. Lots of good information for my insane idea for the FarScape puppets.
The Masquerade was run by a wonderful woman named Cindy Shockey who, with her crew, kept it fun for the rest of us. I spent part of the afternoon fixing the puppets and checking the costumes for things that needed touching up. I also got a nap, which I really needed, and an hour of swimming in with Caroline. Peter picked us up dinner at the local Outback Steakhouse and considering the horror stories we heard about the restaurants in the area it was a splendid move. We made it to the room for workmanship judging on time and were first to go in front of those judges. They asked quite a few questions about how I had done various pieces of the costumes and the puppets. They liked the Dr. Who Puppets. I had done that set on a bet I made during the first airing of the Dr. Who Movie. They told me that they liked the detail.
We were judged for workmanship by 6:15 and the contest was to start at 8:00 and Caroline was getting fidgety. Peter took point on this and followed her around as she bolted from one point to another on the lower convention level of the hotel. About the time the Masquerade started Caroline had settled into my lap and was sipping water. We had a game plan if she fell asleep.
After the children’s category was over, we were taken to the backstage area. I put the Grinch Mask on Ariel while Peter put the coat and scarf on Caroline. I put the 4th incarnation of the Doctor on my arm and the 6th incarnation on Peter’s. The staff helped Ariel on to the stage in the wings.
“Entry #7, One Night in Whoville”
“And the Grinch grabbed the toys and started to shove
Ariel enters with a really great Grinch walk with a large red sack over her shoulder audience laughs and boos the Grinch.
When he heard a small sound like the coo of the dove.
He turned around fast and he saw a small Who”
Caroline wanders on towards the Grinch wearing a 4th incarnation Dr. Who outfit.
“It was Dr. Cindy Loo Who, who was no more than two.”
The audience bursts into laughter.
“Yahoo Who Dora, Yahoo Who Dora. Welcome Christmas..”
I place out the 4th Doctor Puppet and start mouthing to the song which gets a giggle. On the next verse Peter pops the 6th Doctor Puppet which gets a slightly louder giggle. Then on cue Katie and Rachael pop out of the audience with Doctors 1, 2,3, and 8. (5 and 7 are with the actors who portrayed those roles). We got off singing the Whovian Christmas Song. As the music starts to fade the announcer says, “Next year, Harlan hears a Who.”
Lots of laughter and groans.
We took some pictures and waited for the judges to judge. I am very happy with what we won. I got a workmanship award for the puppets. We received 3rd place in the Champions Cup which was wonderful since there were 8 entries in that category. Then we got the biggie, Best Presentation. I was very very happy about that.
After all that, we went back to the room to meet up with some friends. Caroline decided that she had had enough and proceeded to put her bedtime toys in her crib. I pulled out her PJs and she promptly got up on the bed and lay down to get a clean diaper and ‘jamies. I put her in the crib where I think she was telling the stuffed animals what she had done that evening. I went to 10 forward for a bit with the first Doctor puppet and had some fun. I got back to the room to find Peter watching the Dr. Who episode entitled “The Three Doctors”.
Now it is time to pack and get ready for the trip back home.
I am grateful to everyone who helped me pull this one off.
