Dec. 1st, 2004

Ariel is home. She got home right before the weather turned nasty last night which was rather late. Caroline was happy to see her this morning. I did get my first project done yesterday. Now on to the second cleaning project.

December 1st has rolled around or over me as the case maybe. The Novel in a Month contest was stuck at 5000 rather than 50,000 words. I had more on paper but not in the computer. I plan on trying to get to 50,000 by Dec 31st just to see if I can do it. Art by the Inch stopped at 2100 which was about 400 inches short of a bronze. I think I am going to do that one again when it is offered. I don’t know if I would try both of them on the same month again. I kept feeling guilty about one when I was working on the other.

Remember that cold I kept feeling as if it was going to explode in my head at any time? Well I had a dental appointment for a standard teeth cleaning and they took x-rays because it was time to take dental x-rays. My dentist told me to go see my GP because he suspects that I have a sinus infection. He said that one way or another there is evidence on the x-ray that my sinus cavity is very inflamed. An infection could go a long way to explains the lack of energy I have been feeling for a bit. I never really had a fever but I have been having a lot of sinus aches and pains. Sudafed is the order of the day even though I am breathing through my nose just to see if I can dry up the rest of my sinuses and relieve the pressure on my face.

There is another political discussion heating up on one the puppetry groups. There was one that got a little heated right before the election along with the discussion of if we should be talking politics at all on the board. No one is getting shouted down really. If anything this group tends to allow these sorts of things heat up a bit as long as there are no personal attacks. Once the first personal cyber tomato flies then the debate is over. Best line to come out of it so far was Bob’s “If there was ever a meeting of Puppeteers for Bush, I don't think they'd have trouble finding enough chairs.” This came out of a discussion about unions and puppeteers.

I am a card-carrying member of Actor Equity Association. I have been for more than 10 years. I had to join the union to get the jobs that paid barely a minimum living wage. It did preclude me from taking some jobs but considering the amount of work I did get at a living wage, I don’t regret it. In theater I find that those that follow the union rules (as screwy as some of them are) are less abusive of the actors as a whole. There is the potential for rampant abuse in the rehearsal and performance process. I had directors who became upset when finally forced to take a break by the rules. If they hadn’t been there, I think one director who would have rehearsal 24/7. In several non-union shows I worked on the actors were rehearsing during the day and then performing at night. They would show up at 9 am for rehearsal and not leave the theater until close to midnight with very little additional compensation. Kept the theater’s cost down but had a great toll on the actors and their lives outside that theater.

I have to pull the energy from somewhere to get project #2 started if not completed today. The weather is working against me. These are the dark and rainy sorts of days that make one want to curl up with a mug of coco or hot tea and an good book. But I will have to pull the energy from somewhere and get cracking on cleaning again. I can’t really move anything out of the house since the rain is coming down in buckets which really hurt when they hit you.

I am grateful for my time as a stage manager both union and non-union.
