Bagels are NOT a necessity

Short version: A mother left her 19th month old son in a running car to get some bagels from a bagel shop. She comes out to see a strange man jumping into her Nissan Xterra (expensive SUV) and drive off. She threw herself on the car and was knocked off. The cops found the car 15 minutes later and caught the guy. What has she learned? “I want all mothers to know not to leave their children in the car even for a minute.” DUH She says she left the car on so her baby could have air conditioning. The story in the paper made her sound sort of heroic trying to save her baby. She was blindingly stupid and caught a break that she should be grateful for the rest of her life. Maybe she should sell the SUV and give the money to the poor. I am just hoping that she learns something from all this like Children are more important than shopping.
I read this article and my blood pressure just went soaring. I screamed at the paper,” You don’t leave a child in a car much less a baby for even a minute.” If the kid was sleeping then delay the errand. I don’t think picking up bagels for a friend is a life saving situation. I have had a number of times I have been out on errands and Caroline has fallen asleep. In some cases I take her out and let her sleep in her stroller or on my shoulder. In others I go home and wait until she is done with her nap to run the errand. If she is being a handful, depending on the situation, I suck it up and go out in public with an energetic child of varying moods. When you are in a smaller town with places you visit regularly, people know you and your children. When Caroline threw a temper tantrum in the fabric store because she was in the cart and wanted to be moving, Maureen looked up at her from the cutting table and said, “Did someone forget to take a nap?” Maureen knows that usually Caroline is watching the people around her and is good for a smile or two so this was an off day for her.

With Peter and Ariel up in Boston, I figured I could make myself something for dinner that they don’t like. I settled on Kielbasa and Sauerkraut on a roll with spicy mustard. The first part of the adventure happened when the van started smoking. I have a call into our mechanics who are just down the road to see when I can bring it in. So I transferred the car seat to my pick-up truck. It strapped in very nicely and tightly. Caroline liked sitting next to Mommy to run errands. We went to the supermarket and tried to find the sauerkraut. No one seemed to know where it was until someone directed me to the deli. There a young man was able to help me find where they had hidden it. I managed to find the other items I needed and we left the store. Caroline had been being a food fussy all day finally decided that she was really hungry and wanted real food. I gave her one of her meat dishes and some plain pasta, which she gobbled. She has a general word for when she is hungry. “Ba” she cries. We just have to convince her she wants solids not milk which can be the trick.
