Caroline will be 1 1/2
Jun. 4th, 2004 09:28 amA Caroline Cuteness Update
In no particular order, here are some of the things Caroline has done recently that have both amazed and amused us.
As of Saturday she will be a year and a half old. She’s got the walking thing down. She can communicate many of her wants and desires. She is working on words. So far we have Mama, Dada, Ba (Baa) which means bottle, Bath, Bear, Ball, Hi, Bye, Kitty, Puppy, Night Night, and Chicken (we don’t know why chicken but she says it in conjunction with my Muppet Chicken so we know that it is chicken). She shakes her head “No” when she doesn’t want something or doesn’t want to do something. She will also say “Yea” when she does want something or is particularly proud of something she has done.
She loves her stuffed bears. The other day she gathered 5 of large ones and lined them up next to each other on the sofa very carefully. She then grabbed a book and sat in the middle of the line among her bears. She will also take as many bears as she can (the record is currently 6) and sit in her little red chair with all the bears she can hold in her lap. The little red chair was Peter’s when he was a child so it has a lot of sentimental value. A couple of days ago, she was in her room with her toys. She walked into the bathroom, opened the shower door, and put one of her bears in the tub saying “Bear, bath, bear, bath”. She then proceeded to put her favorite bath toys in the tub with the bear and tried to pick up her bath chair and put it in the tub with the bear. She wanted to give the bear a bath.
Caroline and I go to a play group once a week. It gives her a chance to play with other children and some structured time as well with songs and games with the teacher. There is one game called “Freeze” where the teacher plays a song and everyone dances until the word freeze then we freeze. The kids hold shakers that make noise during the dance. Until a few weeks ago, when the freeze dance came on Caroline would have me pick her up and dance with her as she shakes her shakers. Then she watched as the older kids started to dance on their own during the dance. She made it clear she wanted to do this on her own. She’d dance in place kinda bobbing up and down and shaking her shakers. She would stop when she heard the word freeze and then start up when the music did. This past week she added an element that had all the mothers and the teacher in stitches. When the music was going she would shake her shakers and spin in a circle looking at the ceiling until she became so dizzy she fell down. She would then continue to shake the shakers and kick with her feet with the beat until the world stopped spinning. Then she would get up and do it again. But any time the freeze command was given she would stop what she was doing and freeze.
She likes to sit on the couch like mommy. She sits where I usually sit with her on the couch and pulls up my lap blanket, which was given to me by the Buffalo cast of “Tony and Tina,” over her legs. She will then either “read” a book or drink a bottle or sippy cup. She is doing a lot of imitative behavior recently. She is close to figuring out door knobs which means I have to get those plastic guards for the handles. She will sit in her sister’s lap with a game controller and push buttons on her controller as Ariel plays a game on the X-box or the Playstation 2. She knows what the remote control for the TV is for. It is a really challenge keeping it from her. She was watching Sesame Street the other day and got a hold of the remote. She pushed buttons at random and managed to change the channel to C-Span. She looked panicked and held out the remote to me and with a sound made it clear she wanted me to change the channel back. So I did and she handed the remote to me with a sigh of relief. She hasn’t really gone for the TV remote since.
