I have gay friends. I have known gay couple who have been together for over 20 years. When I heard that one couple had broken up after being together for 7 years, I was more upset then when I heard that one of my straight friends was getting a divorce after 3 years of marriage. The gay couple worked out their differences and got back together and are heading to the 20 year mark. My other friend remarried and is much happier that he was before. Sometimes divorce is necessary to end a bad relationship, but in our disposable society, I think many people use it for a quick fix rather than working on the problems within the marriage. Right now the couple that is heading to 20 years has a four drawer filing cabinet with all the legal papers they have had to had drawn up so they can do simple things like visit each other in the hospital if it become necessary. They have another file for giving each other power of attorney and making sure that the wills will hold up in court if one of the families decides to contest the will. They do have a joint checking account which was the easiest thing to get out of the reams of paper they have to prove they are committed to each other. Now if they could get married, that filing cabinet could (and would) go away [Frankly they are tired of moving it] since all the things they have had to define on paper are a given if you are married.
George Bush says we need a constitutional amendment to define marriage. I say he is wrong on so many levels. He left the door open for "civil union" which falls so under the separate but equal chant. But it is not the same. It just isn't. It use to be illegal, according to the Catholic Church, for one to marry outside of the faith. Well that changed with Vatican II. It use to be on the good ol' US of A that people of two different races were not allowed to marry. My friend Adrianna is darn glad that went away since she would not exist. Now we need to step up to the plate and let our views be known. Write your congressman (both local and national) how you feel on this subject. Do it now, because there might not be a later for getting rid of that filing cabinet.
