I was once working on a comic book project (nothing came of it) and one of the ideas I had was little gremlins who borrow things from people's houses. The thing would get warm when it was being looked for, and the gremlin would rush to put it back. It would put it back somewhere where there were no witnesses, which is why things turn up in strange places or show up where you swear you looked before.
I kept the notion for future use, and added a superstition that if you clapped twice and said "give it back!" the thing would turn up.
