DragonCon 2010 Brain Dump part Trois

Will be behind the cut since this will be just as massive as the previous one.

A few housekeeping things that I had forgotten the first time I wrote this up.

I believe it was Friday but it might have been Saturday that John C and his lovely wife Laura presented us with a little Vinylmation figure of Colonel Critchlow Suchbench from the Adventure’s Club. They knew how much that figure meant to us. It is now on top of our Tiki Mickey Statue with an entire adventure on how it got there.

I played telephone tag with Misty Lee for a while on Saturday.

I also sold one puppet on Friday and one on Saturday. And I was informed that security had to keep on people NOT to take pictures of the steampunk critters.

Sunday Where Caroline joins our merry band

Sunday morning I went to my folk’s house for breakfast to pick up Caroline and go to Mass with my parents. I woke up a little before the alarm went off so I let Peter sleep as I snuck out.

After mass I got to talk to Father Brian who was also participating on panels at DragonCon so I knew he was going to be down there during our annual rib night.

Rib night is something that we do when we feel like it. We use to try to go to Fat Matt’s and have a meal which can be impossible so we started bringing it in and asking some family and friends to join us for some southern style food. It is a nice way for us to get some time to talk to people that we see maybe once a year. A couple of our friends politely pass because we don’t have much on the veggie part of the spectrum.

I got back with Caroline and handed her off to Peter so she could sit at his table and earns some money by selling her drawings. He was doing his official DragonCon author autographing so we went there. At the table one over was Larry Dixon and Mercedes Lackey who I have known for more years than either of us would care to admit. I went over and had a very nice chat with Larry catching up on this and that. I finally got to introduce Peter to Larry and Misty after so many years that we have had near misses. Larry was kind enough to give Caroline a postcard of some of his work. It had a lion on it so Caroline became his friend for life. I think am going to have to go back and finish up that Herald that I started and stopped.

I went off to my panel on the friendship between Tolkien and Lewis. Getting to the Lord of the Rings track was a quest in itself but I found it. My fellow panelists were great and, I think, we had a good panel. Honestly I didn’t have a bad panel or panel member all weekend. New recorded. I went back into the elevator to pick something up in the room and on the way down I had yet another fine chat with Stan “the man” Lee while watching the other people on the elevator try to pick their jaws up off the floor.

I ran by Peter’s table to pick up Caroline and go run some errands. Caroline had earned 21 and wanted to buy a cheetah. So I took her to the dealer’s room where she lead me to the both and proudly handed over her cash to get her purchase. We ran over to the walk of fame where I had promised some people I would bring her by. Armin was amazed how big she had gotten. Of course the last time he saw her she was three months old. We did short visits with our friends and went back to the hotel.

Peter and our good friend John H went and got the food while I finished up where everything was going to go. We were ready to go early which is always nice.

Then a slew of people went in and out of our doors. Some I got to chat with even for a little while and others I at least got a hug from. I introduced people to each other especially if I thought they would have fun talking to each other. Peter had to go MC the Sunday Night Masquerade. Caroline went with him dressed up as Astrid to help him. (A Side note: If anyone has pictures of Caroline in her Astrid Costume, I’d love to see them.) Up in the room we watching the Masquerade, ate BBQ and had a lovely time. It was fun seeing all these facets of my life mixed with each other.

Post Masquerade Peter and Caroline sat down to watch the replay and I went out to see my kin and some friends I said I was going to catch up with. First spent sometime talking to my brother which is a rare thing indeed. I braved the Hyatt and got into an elevator going down on the way up who should join the elevator party but Misty Lee and Paul Dini who we have been trying to find all weekend. I got my hug from Misty and we went off to talk for a bit to catch up on things. They had seen Caroline and couldn’t believe how big she had gotten. We went up to the Hospitality Suite and I got to introduce Mike Lee (who I have known since he was 12) to Misty Lee. They clicked and chatted a way while Paul and I discussed puppetry and animation. I could feel the show catching up with me so I went back to my room. Good thing too since they were only letting people with room keys in the hotel and there were 3 sheriff officers on our floor not letting you through unless you could prove you should be on that floor.

Monday In which we finish up our Grand DragonCon Challenge

We had breakfast with Paul and Misty which was very nice. Peter took Caroline off with him so I had a chance to start the packing. It is always interesting to see how I am going to get everything back in the car. I did my first panel on graphic novels and novels for boys again great panelists and good panel. Thumbs up to Bev and the whole YA staff. Y’all rock so much. Afterwards I ran to the Art Show and pulled everything that wasn’t sold. I am seriously thinking about putting up to sale the items that didn’t sell.

I went back to packing and then at 2:30 I had my last panel on ‘Staying Sane in the Insane World of Publishing’ which went very well. My fellow panelists were top notch and I think that was the first panel I did with Phil Nutman even though we have known each other for more years than we care admit (Think Tundra publishing to get an idea). It was fun and the questions from the audience were good ones.

After that I worked my way to where Peter was with hugs and good-byes along the way. Peter did do his end of DragonCon Panel and it was well attended. He announce a couple of projects that he just got the green light on including one with Caleb Pinkett which is being done with his sister Jada and her husband Will. Will is rather well known for both his musical and acting careers.

We said our good-byes and then made the drive back to New York. Caroline was only late for school by about 30 minutes which was pretty darn good.

Now DragonCon is fading a bit from my mind but I carry the good feels and fun people in my heart. To all the staff of DragonCon You seriously RAWK!!! To put on that show with the minimal problems that were had is nothing short of amazing. To everyone who had me participate on panels, I am more than willing to do it again next year. To all the congoers, you are the reason we keep doing this. I love meeting the fans and the people who read this blog. I am glad to say that more people came to tell me that they read this blog this year than previous years.

If they want us back, we will be there.

I am grateful for everything that happened at DragonCon both the good and the not as good.

Okay, a few things:

1. Try these links for Caroline/Astrid

Don't know if she's in either of them, but you never know.

2. Misty Lee? Any relation to Stan?

3. I thought Misty Lackey and Larry D had given up on Cons totally after a fan got killed by a crazed fan? When did they revise that?

4. I guess Weis and Hickman weren't there?

I've been out of things too long. I'm not current on ANY of the gossip.

Nope. Lee is not Stan's real last name.

Thanks for the links.

This year we have seen each other twice so they are doing limited conventions where they trust the security

If they were there I didn't see them. I only saw Laurel K because of the banquet.
