Costume Count: 2 down 3 to go.

I finished the Sarah Dress yesterday. It still needs a few finishing touches like a bit of bric brac at the shoulders and the hair piece but I am holding that sort of stuff until next week with the rest of the finishing touches. So right now I do have something I could enter into the contest. Now we move onto the harder stuff. Peter, Ariel and Caroline did a scavenger hunt at Home Depot and came up with some interesting items to be used for the goblins. A long time ago when I was at Emory, I met a brilliant artist who made kick ass greek armor out of rubbermaid garbage cans. Michael also made the most beautiful leather masks for the show Hecuba. So taking a page out of his book and Froud’s drawings, I am seeing what I can do with found objects that I can augment.

I love my sewing machine. It is a Singer 503 Slant-O-Matic from the md 60s. I know that it has in the family longer than my brother who is a couple of years younger than me. My mother made many a playsuit on that machine. When she got her new machine, she told us that the first one to learn to sew on the machine would be the new owner. Technically my brother learned first but because I spent so much time making puppet clothes on her new machine, I got the 503. It is very solid machine that still runs like a top. I get it cleaned and tuned once or twice a year. The only piece I want to get a replacement for is the foot pedal which is wearing out due to use. I also have an older Singer that was willed to me by the maternal grandmother. It has a knee pedal which for me is harder to operate. I have a newer sewing machine too that I got on major sale but I don’t like it as much as my old Singer.

Speaking as someone who has made the Sarah dress (I'm assuming you're talking about the dream-sequence ballgown, yes?), my congratulations. That thing is not easy. We couldn't find sparkly butterly appliques for the bodice, so we had to hand-bead and sequin a bunch of plain ones. (Now, of course, I can't sneeze without blowing down sparkly butterly appliques....such is life and 'stumery.)

Actually I whimped out a bit and made the green dress she is wearing at the beginning of the movie.
I found the exact color fabric when looking for something else so I went the easy route. Less so with Jareth and the Goblins.
Many kudos to you for making the Dream Dress. I have only seen it attempted once and the seamstress told me she nearly went blind beading the dress then beading Jareth's jacket. I am avoiding the beading problem by putting Jareth in the armor from his first apperance.

Ah yes, beading...

[livejournal.com profile] rikibeth and I watched "Earth Girls Are Easy" while beading that jacket, and I think it may have saved our sanity, if not our eyes.

If you'd like to see my Sarah gown, there's a picture on my sub-page at the Sick Pups website (http://www.sickpups.org -- click on "Member Galleries" then my name).

WOW! That is lovely. You make such wonderful costumes!
I am actually going to try for workmanship one more time and if I don't get something this time then I really don't know what the Shoreleave Judges are looking for. This is probably my swan song for costuming as well. For me, this is one of the ultimate costume sets for me to do. I say this not knowing what Peter and Ariel will come up with next.
I do know that I want to finish Peter's King Arthur costume and make me a pirate wench costume for the Ren Faire. Ariel wants to go as a Dragon Keeper and she just out grew the costume I made for her almost 4 years ago. Then there is Caroline. I figure in time I am going to hear the words"Mommy can you make me..." with those big eyes and shy smile that melts my heart.
