Not a Great Day for 60s Icons

Peter, Paul, and Mary were part of my childhood. I heard them in school. I heard them on the radio. I loved Puff the Magic Dragon. I never got to see them in concert or if I did, I have forgotten it. Mary Travers passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. I put on Puff the Magic Dragon this morning and listened to it and it still makes me tear up at the end. It did as a kid and it still does as an adult. Caroline and I are going to sit down and read a rather beautiful visual rendition of the song in book form this afternoon.

Henry Gibson was part of Laugh-In. I watched Laugh-In with my parents and probably got maybe a 1/3 of the jokes if that. But it was colorful and funny. Henry Gibson had one character that stood out for me which was “The Poet” that I understood the gag as I got older and I found his poems very funny. He showed up all through my television viewing most recently on “Boston Legal” as Judge Clark Brown who had a very funny idea of the law and what should and shouldn’t be allowed. Many people really enjoyed his performance in the Blues Brothers which was a total contrast to just about anything else he had done to that point.

This weekend has been thrown into flux due to professional commitments. Next weekend we are at Foolscap out in Washington State. Then we are home for a bit and then we are off on an adventure in conjunction with the Armageddon Expo in October. Good thing all our passports were in order.

I am grateful that I had Peter, Paul, and Mary and Henry Gibson in my life.

This was pretty much exactly what I was going to say about Mary Travers and Henry Gibson. Thank you :)

Henry Gibson was my favorite judge on Boston Legal, he will be dearly missed.

Laugh-In was my favorite show when it was on (tho I was too young to get some of the humor). I remember hating Watergate because they would pre-empt Laugh-In to show the hearings on TV.
The cool thing about Gibson was that he was always good for character parts right up until the end, so even if you don't recognize the name, you'll remember (and miss) the face.

"Puff the Magic Dragon" always gets to me.
