PBS for da Win

Caroline has a new routine because of school. She comes home, has a snack, plays a bit with her toys, and does her homework. At 4:00pm she sits down with me and we watch Sid the Science Kid and then at 4:30 we watch Word Girl.

Sid the Science Kid is a new show produced by the Jim Henson company. It is the next step up from Waldo from Disney 3-D. The show features real-time computer-generated puppets, using the new Henson Digital Performance System which is really slick. The show teaches basic concepts of science like observation, analysis, and experimentation. Caroline loves this show and we discuss the words that she doesn't know. She wants her own magnifying glass to observe things. I really like the show for how it presents science as a fun thing that teaches you about the world around you.

Word Girl has expanded her vocabulary. It is a clever series that teaches the mean of words to kids. Word Girl and her sidekick a chimp named Captain Huggyface take on various villains using their super powers and extensive vocabulary to bring the bad guys down. It has very clever writing. There are jokes that I find funny that go right over Caroline's head. I have heard Caroline use words she learned on Word Girl correctly.

I am grateful for shows that teach my child things that will serve her well in school.

We like both of those shows, too! Both of our kids do, and yes, I've heard our daughter using words from Word Girl. Actually, I think I've heard our son using some of them as well. :)

Our kids love both of those shows, too! I am a big fan of Word Girl. The other really good vocabulary show on PBS Kids is Martha Speaks. Then, of course, there is Cyberchase, which is a math and science oriented show that Adara is a total fangirl for. :)

*I* am grateful that there are television shows that both entertain and instruct children, and that there are parents who take the time to pay attention to what their children are watching, and even watch with them.

Teddy is a fan of both shows. In fact, his friend Ruby dressed as Word Girl for Halloween! It was precious.
