LJ Idol Introduction the 2nd

If you want to see what I wrote last year then read here

For those of you who are checking out this web log for the first time, welcome.

I'm Kathleen O. David generally known on the net as either Puppetmaker40 or Kath the Puppeteer. If you met me before 1990 then you tend to call me Kathy. If you met me after 1990 then it is either Kathleen or Kath.

I am many things to many people. I have had a slew of jobs that range from cancer research (chief bottle washer and Igor at the Emory Cancer research center) to rock and roll (sound board operator and general crew) with a lot of interesting jobs along the way. I have been a book editor at Del Rey Books. I am a master puppeteer. I am a doll maker. I am a costumer and mask maker. I am a card carrying AEA stage manager. I have managed both book stores and comic book shops in my time. The list is much longer but this is an intro not a resume.

But one of my most important jobs on this planet is being Mommy to my daughter Caroline. If you continue to read this blog, you will find that I talk about Caroline a lot here. She is my one and only child. She is my husband's fourth daughter with three from the previous marriage. The youngest lives with us and answers to Ariel when the headphones aren't wrapped around her skull. The other two are in their mid 20s and have lives of their own in other states that we follow along with.

My husband is rather well known in various circles. He is a writer of stuff. He has been published in just about every form of writing possible. He wrote a couple of episodes of Babylon 5 (Soul Mates and There in the Honor lies) and a series for Nickelodeon called Space Cases. He is current working at Marvel on a number of books including Dark Tower; She-Hulk; and X-Factor. His novel "Tigerheart" came out this past June and his next "Mascot in Training" is coming out either this month or the next.

Oh, I became a published author this summer. I had a short story called "On a Pedestal" published in the Big Finish anthology "Dr. Who Short Trips: Qualities of Leadership".

If you friend me, then I tend to friend back. I feel shy about friending people who haven't expressed an interest first. But don't feel shy about friending me. I'll a very friendly person as many of the readers here can attest to.

I am going to open this thread to questions. If you got 'em then ask 'em. There are some that I can't answer due to Non-disclosure agreements that I or Peter have signed and there are some parts of my life that I keep off the net on purpose.

So, what more do you want to know about me? (This is open to long time readers as well)

Somehow I missed that your husband wrote Space Cases, I friggin LOVE that show. It should come out on DVD if it hasn't already.

I think I'm one of the few people that caught a glimpse of a Firefly episode in the background and said, HEY, THAT CHICK IS FROM SPACE CASES! Jewel Staite for the win.

:D That's a nifty talent! I've got to learn to do that!

Excellent! Good luck to you! You're another one that I enjoyed readin last season :)

I think it's squeewaycoolOMG that you know all these famous people -- and are married to one.

I know *I* gulped audibly when I found out who you were married to!

I agree, it's not name-dropping if you really know them.

Do you think you might do more stage management work in the future?

[identity profile] puppetmaker40.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't know. The last couple of gigs I have had were ones that kind of dropped in my lap. So I might very well do so but I am not actively pursuing a job in that field.

[identity profile] rosepurr.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently I missed your post about the short story. Congrats!!!

[identity profile] puppetmaker40.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess not but again that chewing out just made me question how I was perceived by others that might not know me in person.

The Internet can be a rather funny place.

[identity profile] puppetmaker40.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I really enjoyed writing it.

[identity profile] puppetmaker40.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I so loved Space Cases too. Bill and Peter have comic book rights for the series but just haven't found the right fit for it. I think IDW since they recently started Galaxy Quest comics.

It was fascinating because I was allowed to sit in on the discussions about the finding and patient care follow ups. I learned a lot at that job.

See now when I discovered that last year I was excited about who your hubby is, especially since I started reading him as a teen... but even more watching you write so lovingly about your daughter.

Not to mention, I haven't read any post of yours I didn't enjoy. Speaking of, must remember to friend you this time! (I kept meaning to last year and just spaced)

Just *HUG*!

[identity profile] tristam.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Amazing. You just became infinitely cooler again. How do you keep doing that? As a former cancer researcher myself, I salute you.

[identity profile] celticboy.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, have you recovered from the bad head injury you must have sustained last season?

True or False

[identity profile] hexkitten.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been a book editor at Del Rey Books.

I've encountered a handful of people who insist that they don't need to pay attention to grammar or spelling, because that's what editors are for. Is that true?

While I'm babbling out questions, are you familiar with a show called "Puppets Who Kill"?

[identity profile] cielamara.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to know some interesting stories from your days as a stage manager. Tell me that hilarious catastrophic things happen even in the Big League (tm).

[identity profile] celticboy.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Never saw Space Cases (wasn't shown in the UK if I recall).

I gave up reading X-Factor a very long time ago. (Muir Island Saga for those wanting to know more). I hated the new direction it took. I'm still a fan of the OLD stuff, around the Uncanny X-Men era. Mind you, I pretty much abandoned Marvel around that time. The art on Iron Man made it unreadable, X-Factor fell to pieces (in my opinion) and there was nothing left worth reading (again, in my opinion). I didn't start reading anything from Marvel till JMS took over Amazing Spider-man (and look how that ended :( Brand New Day just made me sad.)

I'm more of a DC fan I guess.

Pleased to read you :-)

[identity profile] walkertxkitty.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
*geekgasm* I didn't realize that I'd read quite a few of your husband's works. Wow, I am in good company indeed.

I didn't get to comment on your puppet making when you had the photos up ---was too sick at the time --- but wow!

Playing with puppets is something I do in my spare time, as is the fursuit making so I can appreciate the hard work that goes into them.

You sound absolutely fascinating! I've just started reading graphic novels. I read the first seven volumes of Desert Peach recently; that's good stuff.

Congratulations on becoming a published author; that's huge!

I'm pleased to meet you--and I'm totally friending your journal. Anyone who's had such a collection of jobs has my interest.

[identity profile] kittenboo.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't have a question, I'm just glad you are doing idol again!

[identity profile] norda.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure I'll think of a question when I'm in a better headspace.

But I hear you about the nervousness re: name-dropping.

[identity profile] lordrexfear.livejournal.com 2008-09-17 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
*beep beep*

Just waving through... always good to be reintroduced.

You forgot to mention you give good hugs.

Oh, I became a published author this summer. I had a short story called "On a Pedestal" published in the Big Finish anthology "Dr. Who Short Trips: Qualities of Leadership".

How'd you find out about that market? I'm keen on getting into the Who/Torchwood action myself.

OK, I have a case of the dumb today

IDW?
