New Who Review for "Daleks in Manhattan"

I will say starting out that this is not my favorite episode of Doctor Who. In fact it rates rather low on my list. I do understand what they were trying to do but I live on Long Island and go into Manhattan quite frequently. I also studied the depression era while in college so this one just annoyed my inner historian to no end.

The performances are solid all around. Their casting director did a good job with what they had to work with. Some of the American accents were not quite there but over all not a bad job.

Caroline likes Daleks so she had no problem watching it even when it did get scary.

I am grateful for long walks on a nice beach.

Again not among my favorites and probably the thing I found most off-putting was the human/dalek hybrid. Phallic face as I like to call him. The spats didn't help either. Most of the rest of the episode was OK. The people disappearing and no body really noticing could so happen in that era. There was the color blind casting of the characters which was nice.

Tennant did a nice job of "Not the Daleks yet again" but I do have to say that they are wearing out their welcome. I know that they had them only for 3 seasons so they wanted to use them. But this script was a mish-mosh that really needed another pass to tighten it up. In actuality this and the next episode could have been done in an hour. There is a lot of filler which makes this episode drag out to the "climax" which was the reveal of the hybrid which frankly I laughed when I first saw it.

I do promise that the season does get better. A lot better after these two episodes.

Well, I agree with you on all this. I am getting tired of the unkillable Daleks too. They are getting so overused.

There are so many storylines that can be done without the Cybermen or the Daleks, if only because they keep getting all killed off.

And the liberties with the history was pissing me off too. And Mary was screaming at the television on some of the points.

I am new to the ideas of Dr. Who -- I've only really liked the past 3 or so seasons (harder for me to understand the ones from the 70s, though now that I see these I may have to go back and rewatch them).

I thought that the Daleks were a much older concept than just the past 3 seasons? Wow, if so I can see that long time fans would get rather annoyed.

This was an OK episode, not one that had me rivited (I must say that I am getting annoyed with the female-companions-who-fall-in-love-with-Dr.- Who-who-rejects-them,-but-then-longs-for-them- after-they-are-gone bit).

However, this didn't make much sense to me, either, as 1) why pig men? Pigs are intelligent creatures! If they wanted dumb, why not the sloth? Is this a nod to Circe? 2) If they (Daleks) are striving for purity (which I thought they were) didn't this just totally set them back? Humanity is far from pure. 3) Would someone in the time period really work for aliens? Would he think they were demons? That was a little odd.

But, I will be watching next Friday, I'm sure. :)
