First Saturday of 2009
And today we find out who will be who next or rather who has been tapped to be the next Doctor Who. The fan speculation is at a frenzy pitch. The bookies have odds on all the rumored actors. And whoever it is, they are going to be both praised and pilloried by fandom. There is no way everyone is going to be happy with the choice. Remember how the fans howled about Martha then howled when she left the show and then howled some more when Donna was announced and are now howling that she is gone too. The kvetching from the fans at the end of the last season was monumental.
Fans want what they can't have and when you give it to them, they decide that they didn't really want that. I have seen it in books, movies, TV, and comics. The creator gives the fans what they want and then is ripped for doing so.
Soaps are a good example of that. The fans are crying to get a set of star crossed lovers together. The writers get everything to work out in their lives so they can be together and the fans declare that the happy ending is boring so then that perfect couple either divorces or pick up another lover or have another tragedy that pulls them apart and the fans are happy again for a little while.
I remember being at a convention with the Firefly cast and the fans were upset about a rumor that they had heard about something in the movie that was coming out soon. They kept trying to get the cast to confirm the rumor and excoriate Joss for doing such an evil thing. Adam Balwin stood up and said, "I want you to repeat after me. Trust Joss. (the audience complies) OK let's try that again Trust JOSS (the audience repeats with more vigor). Just keep telling yourself that and you'll be happier. Believe me, Joss knows what he is doing. He created this show." This defused the situation and it became a catch phrase for everyone who had been at that panel.
So whoever is announced today, providing that they can survive the oncoming storm heading their direction, is the next Doctor and I will watch what Mr. Moffat comes up with to do with him in 2010. I am willing to trust those who create to amuse and amaze me since they have done a pretty good job so far.
I am grateful that fandom does care about whatever they are fans of with great passion be it a TV show or a comic or a sports team or an artist or animals or.....
