What's in a Name?
The flight was fine. Caroline was napping during most of it. She was a very good girl getting to the Hotel. She ran around and had a good time. It came to bedtime and she wasn't having any of it. She wanted to run and play anything but settle down for bed. It took Peter over 2 hours to get her to finally go to sleep which was about Midnight. She woke up at 7:10 ready for action. I got up with her so Peter could sleep since he worked later than that and Ariel since it is her Birthday.
I took Ariel to meet up with Jewel and her husband Matt. They sang her Happy Birthday at midnight. Jewel figured out that the first time she met Ariel that Ariel was 3. Matt figured out that he had met Ariel about a year and half ago. This is the second DragonCon for them.
I found out that my Uncle, Aunt and Cousins who live in Louisiana are alive. One of the cousins is not sure if there is damage to their house but the floodwaters stopped 3 houses down from hers. Andy Fox who wrote "Fat White Vampire Blues" is in worse straits. The area that his house is in is under water and he doesn't know what happened to his cats. He can't go to the area because they are not letting anyone back into New Orleans. He has a wife and two young sons and it currently looks like they have lost their house and all it contained. I haven't heard from Frank of Crescent City Con and am a bit concerned about that. There is some news of folks I know in that area trickling into the convention. A number of people aren't going to make it because they have to deal with their Hurricane damage.
DragonCon for me has always been a bit of a homecoming. Atlanta is where I grew up and first went to conventions. I have run into people I have known since I was a young teenager as well as newer friends. This is the first time I have been in the art show in 10 years so I am a bit nervous about that. It is also the first time I have entered a doll in competition. The problem with coming home can be that one has done a lot of things and changed but those here have you in the place where you left. For them time has not moved forward. You are how you left. My family does see the progress in my life and know what has happened since I last visited Atlanta. Between my blog, e-mail, and iChat, we have kept up with each other. A number of my friends know what has happened from reading my blog or talking to my brothers and sister. Then there are those that still have trouble wrapping their brains around the fact that I married Peter and that I have a 2 year-old daughter. To them I am still Kathy O'Shea of the clan O'Shea (being my brothers and sister who have been coming to conventions almost as long as I have) and probably always will be. To others that I meet this weekend for the first time I will be Kathleen O’Shea David because that it what it says on my badge and that is who I am at this point in my life.
I am grateful for DragonCon.
