You Learn Something New Everyday
I learned that I am highly allergic to penicillin now. I wasn’t when I was younger but apparently when my dust and mold allergy ramped up, I became allergic to it. So I am now covered head to toe in itchy hives. It is better than it was yesterday. My doctor gave me some strong antihistamines and steroids to help the itch and the healing. My face no longer looks like Victor Yushchenko’s little sister. So that is a plus. The palms of my hands and the soles of my feet itch like crazy, which is a negative. I was apparently luck that my reaction was not worse than that. So I am taking about 4 different things and drinking lots of water to try to clear this up before traveling. We have our house sitter in place. She gets along well with the cats and loves our DVD collection.
Caroline didn’t make it to Mommy and Me yesterday. I took her but she was so sound asleep when I got there and her teacher was absent that day, I decided to bring her home. Good thing I did. She took a long nap and came down stairs. Rather than running around and playing like she normally does. She took up residence on the couch with her pink blanket, her large Dora the Explorer and her favorite teddy bear. She watched Dora and seemed to be drifting back to sleep. Then she sat up and upchucked onto the throw blanket I had covered her with. I called Peter and he took her upstairs to change her and take her temperature. 101. We gave her the baby Tylenol and she settled into Daddy’s lap while I fixed dinner. She spent most of the evening in someone lap eventually drifting to sleep. At 2am she woke up and wanted attention. Peter, bless his soul, took care of her until she went back to sleep. She got up again at 6:30am. She doesn’t have a fever now and her energy level is much better. She is currently (as I am typing this) sitting on her big bear playing with her Magna Doodle.
One of the places were we don’t have to listen to cell phone conversations is on airplanes. Some do have phones that you can use. Most of the people who I have heard using them are drunk and calling a friend or loved one to have them guess where they are calling from. I did hear one guy place bets with his bookie. He lost the bet on the Yankees he made. In the evening riding back on the train from the city, I was privy to hear a lot about peoples lives in a number of languages. Part of the reason that the wireless carriers want to have cell phones on planes is so that they can sell $3.00 a minute Internet access to wireless computer users. The FCC is leaning towards this being a “good” idea. The FAA, which must approve this venture, is against it. I am too. I really don’t think it will help anyone and will make planes noisier and cut more people off from the rest of the world.
I have had some good conversations with people on planes over the years. I have helped some first time flyer get through the flight. I had one white knuckler who thanked me profusely for talking her through the flight. I have met people from all walks of life. Some of these conversations would probably not have happened if they could have talked on a cell phone the whole flight. I can’t believe we are getting to a point where if you can’t communicate with the rest of the planet, the world is going to end. Hmmm, might be an interesting idea for a short story there. But I Digress. The Doctor argument doesn’t really work either. Is he going to tell someone how to operate from the plane? I really hope that the FAA stonewalls this for at least a couple of years. I do see this happening eventually.
I am grateful for things that make me feel better.
