School's Out for the Summer!
Ariel finished her last exam yesterday and now is starting her summer vacation. She has all sort of things she wants to do this summer most are local and do not involve us driving her anywhere. Also she is at an age and lives in an area where bikes are used to get around. So she can go to the library to her hearts content. The way she has been blowing through books she wants to read, it’s a good thing. She is also going to help me with the costumes for Shoreleave/DragonCon and Caroline.
Since Summer has officially started both by the calendar (Summer Solstice was Sunday) and the schools being out, my internet connection is slowing down to as more kids are spending time on the internet. I noticed it yesterday, but it was really evident today. Considering what sort of modem speeds we had to endure as little as 10 years ago, I am not that torqued by having to wait a bit to get a web site to load.
Summer means many things to me. I have fond memories of spending time with my best friend just reading books. I can remember when we started raiding her old brother’s library to things to read. I first read my way through John Carter of Mars during one hot summer. I can remember going to the library more often in the summer so we would have new things to read. The building was air conditioned and the books felt cool to the skin when you pressed them against you as you stepped back out into the heat. I can remember my mother making Kool-Aid ice pops. She had a Rubbermaid ice pop making set that got a lot of use from all the kids. I can remember the first time I read War and Peace. I was on a beach in Florida and was reading about the cold Russian Winter. I would look up occasionally to warm up. I can remember our yearly family beach trip. The kids were allowed a book box. That was one standard size box which we had to fit all the books, puzzles and toys we wanted to take down with us. There was a lot of negotiation for space. I can remember reading Asterix the Gaul on the way down. Somehow my parents would get a couple of new ones which would keep us quiet for a while. My brother building a hugh sand sculpture every year.
My siblings and I might all make it down to the beach for the first time in close to 10 years. This time it will be with significant others and children, but it will be cool to see everyone in one place for more than an hour. I like Summer, but I could do with less heat and humidity.
