Happy Birthday Beethoven

It is Beethoven’s Birthday today. I plan to pull out my favorite copy of the 7th symphony and play it in remembrance. I also I think I am going to pull out my Schroeder action figure with piano and Beethoven bust and set them up on my desk today.

The hives are fading slowly. They are going away faster than Peter’s did so the treatment is working. I am also having an easier time breathing through my nose. It is interesting that when you have a long-term condition, you don’t remember what it was to breath or not be in pain until it happens. I had this happen before when I was having some problems with my gall bladder. After I started feeling better, I recognized how bad I had been feeling. I have suffer depression in the past and because I know what it is like to be in a blue funk and what it feels like to get out of it, I can recognize when I am slipping there and make the conscious decision not to fall into my pit of despair. That can be a hard one to do but so far I have done it.

Earthsea: Yuck. I wish I had missed the second part now. The first mixed the books together. The second part ran them through the Cuisinart and squished the pulp into something unrecognizable. As a fan of the books, I was really unhappy with the second half. Apparently the author was not too jazzed either but held her tongue until the producers were attributing words she never said to her. http://trashotron.com/agony/columns/2004/12-15-04.htm for her comments on the production.

Yes, I am looking forward to seeing the film version of “Phantom of the Opera”. I always enjoyed the musical and this, from those who have seen it, follows what Webber did very faithfully. The costumes look wonderful. I expect to see some recreations this summer at various conventions. The Bloomingdale’s Christmas Windows are done with costumes from the movie. http://gonyc.about.com/od/photogalleries/l/bl_bloomies01.htm if you want to see pictures.

We have the extended DVD of Return of the King. We watched through several of the “new” sections. No spoilers but the Saruman scene at the tower was excellent. I think we are going to sit down and watch the whole thing this weekend. Of course they are predicting a Northeastern for Monday so we may find ourselves watching the whole thing in one shot. I must check and see if we have coco and marshmallows. I know we have popcorn.

There was a Bill Irwin special on “Great Performances” last night. I think it is playing on various PBS channels this month. I think Bill Irwin is a brilliant performer. If he had lived in the time of Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and Buster Keaton we would be saying his name along with those names. His ability for physical comedy is amazing. The special was pretty well done. They didn’t talk to Bill much in the first half but more in the second. I now really hope that some day they release the version of “Waiting for Godot” he was in with Steve Martin, Robin Williams, and F. Murray Abraham. The clip that they showed made me just want to see more. I have stage manager Godot more than once in my career.

I am grateful for theater in its many forms.

Heh. [livejournal.com profile] darthsatyr and I opted to watch our ROTK: EE instead of the second half of "Earthsea", and apparently we made the right choice.

I really liked the Saruman scene; I think it was a mistake to cut it for the theatrical release. Among other things, it helped redeemed Movie!Theoden for me. They often portrayed him as sort of assy -- constantly snapping at Aragorn, making bad decisions -- and seeing him trying to talk down Wormtongue reminded me, "Yes, this man is still a noble person."
