No. We didn't get Scans_Daily shut down

And I want to state that here in the open. If you read Peter’s Blog about what happened, you can see that we did nothing to past what was stated in the thread.

But this being the Internet has not stopped people from ranting and accusing Peter of all kinds of horrible things because someone posted a link to Scans_Daily on a number of the major comic books websites where publishers pay attention to what is being said. I am just clearing my mail box of some of the hate mail I am getting that is rather rank.

Do I think anyone is going to learn anything from this? May be a couple of people who hadn’t really thought about copyright that way or how you treat people on the Internet should be close to the way you would talk to them in person, but those who have a serious hate on for us right now are not going to learn a thing. They will continue to play the injured party in all this and never see their part in what happened as anything but the best of intentions.

What I am taking out of this is that I yet again need to be very careful about what I say on the Internet. I need to state when I am posting something that I liken to going to a pub with a bunch of friends and blowing off some steam to something that I would say on a panel at a convention in public. In some ways I am a public figure or at least a public figure by association which makes this sort of thing a little harder to navigate.

I’m not mad at anyone or annoyed at anyone over this. A little tired maybe but I knew the job was dangerous when I took it.

I am grateful for the support I have been given by people I know and those I don’t who have my back in this mess.

I think the internet is the new drama monster. I wonder if the speed and accessibility of the telephone had these kinds of issues when it first became mainstream?

I have to admit...I'm guilty of causing drama on LJ which, if you've been reading my blog, is plain as day. I think I'm going to come up with a list of rules for myself about making posts and posting comments and such. Maybe I'll get into the habit of NOT putting my foot in my mouth...

All I can say is that I have enjoyed pretty much every book Peter has written that I have read. He and kradical and so many others (David Mack, Dayton Ward, Michael Jan Friedman, John Vornholt, to name some of my other favorites) have spun so many tales that inspire me to be creative and daring in my own writing and have added so much to some of my fandoms...

For every pissed off fan, there's probably 4 or 5 of us that still appreciate all the work our favorite artists go through.

Speaking of... Is there something in the water? I know John Scalzi has been defending another author here on LJ who has been getting flack from his fans because he's still working on the next novel in a series while also working on several other projects...

Scans daily is why I bought some of your husbands work actually, before the shut down mind you. I was rather fond of his X-Factor run overall. There were a great many comics I would not have learned about otherwise except by scans daily, and I know a great number of people were in the same boat.

Now, I won't hear about as much new and old, due to that community being gone. I also won't be purchasing your husband's work any longer. So by all means, protect the precious copyrights. They're obviously more important than the customers.

That site needed to be shut down period and had LJ not done it soon I would have reported it myself. You don't steal an artist's work and claim it's o.k., you just don't. As an artist myself that just chaps my hide that someone wouldn't understand that. We work too damned hard to have our work copied and distributed without permission just because someone thinks they have the RIGHT to.

I give away a lot of my paintings for free, I donate several of them to charity auctions to be sold as originals to raise money for worthy causes. I would be outraged if the people who bought them made copies and debuted them all over the internet. ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED!!!

It's never easy. Some days are better than others. But you and I have talked about all the "untyping" I do, for fear of having the Internet go stupid on me, and I'm just a satellite in the radius of public figures, not a public figure myself... yet.

The fact of the matter is, though, The Internet Is Serious Business. That sounds contrite and snarky, but it's what gets thrown in my face every single time I try to be polite, mature, and the slightest bit authoritative.

What happened is in the past, and people will forget about it. In time. The best advice I can give (if I am even entitled to give advice in this situation; ignore or take as you will) is that people will be upset, so don't get involved. Things blow over. The complaints that you hear are never from the majority, they're only the loudest voices thereof.

I'm sorry about what's happened. I'm sorry about the countless Internet Butthurt people posting all over about how they hate Peter for "what he did". I'm sorry that you two had to get involved.

(Who am I? A friend of a friend of a father's sister's cousin's roommate. What does that make us? Absolutely nothing.)

It's been an especially attack-heavy series of days in my corner of LJ, for some reason. (Another friend of mine went through a major attack that led to that friend shutting down Anonymous comments.) And that's been frustrating, and I'm not even in the crossfire. I'll take some solace in knowing I haven't been enraging people.

I've read both this and Peter's post. Thank the both of you for being open about things; I know it's difficult to write about.

I'm very glad that Peter cleared up the issue of how exactly the community got killed. People aren't going to listen to reason, though, unfortunately, and there's likely to be a bad backlash from it.

That said, screw 'em. I have your backs and will defend the both of you to the death if need be. I'm not, however, going to stick my hand in a hornet's nest and wiggle my fingers around. Most of these people aren't going to be reasoned with.

What I will do is advocate the use of manners on the internet. I know, it sounds crazy, right? How dare I suggest such a thing?

It's unfortunate that a proven truism about the net is that anonymity + distance = total fuckwad. I would like to see people start trying to reverse that impression. Everyone should think about how they act in public - and the net's as public as it gets. Don't act in a way you wouldn't act in real life. Maybe that makes me sound naive, but I couldn't care less.

Kath and Peter, neither of you deserve this shitstorm and you were well within your rights to respond as you did, even though it's usually a lot better to just ignore that sort of thing.

You know, I remember when I first read Knight Life. I was sitting on the Q train near Kings Highway, going Manhattan to my brother's. And I remember just falling into a book that spoke to me and made me think and how angry I felt when the train announced my stop because I just wanted to sit thee and finish it.


I don't get how people who get hours of pleasure can just steal Peter's work and not feel an ounce of remorse that they are ripping off a real live human being who has a family and bills to pay.

But please give Peter (and yourself) the message that for every idiot, there's fans who treasure his work, share them with friends and family and are grateful!

I'm going to do what I always do when idiots attack. I'm going to dedicate an hour of my volunteering time in honor of the David family. (I invite anyone who wants to join me, just pick a charity, and do an extra hour or two)

I'm surprised I haven't gotten some flak, myself. I think that I was the only one there who mentioned the copyright infringement issue.

But, at least fandom and the Internet are both well known for their fickle nature. I'm sure that by the next convention, everyone will have moved on to the next big thing.
